From the web it seems as if the Apple Express (AE) can be used additional to an existing wifi router. If that is true can t be "paired" to a Netgear 300 in order to extend the range?

I use an AE to extend my WiFi network (Airport Extreme). Which is a dead simple, one click setup.
I managed to do it on my old Netgear network as well, but that required a load of pain involving getting the exact settings correct in the Netgear router

Agreed can be done, but it's very unstable and painful to get working in comparison to the simplicity with another Apple unit (for example with Airport extreme, Time Capsule, Airport Express)

To my understanding:
According to marketing material the Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) is only a an access point (router?) and does not include modem facilities, and, it seems that the AEBS would then require an additional modem to connect the unit to the eg ADSL network.

Am I correct? If not, what then?

Yes, it must be connected to ADSL, 3G, or other modem.
