I am travelling next week and I have a chance to access airport lounges through my American Express card. Does anyone have experiences in these lounges and are they really worth the effort?

From my point of view, airport lounges are only needed when you have a long wait before your flight. I wouldn't leave super early to get to the airport just to make use of the lounge.

If you have spare time before your flight leaves, you can spend it in the lounge. You can relax better. Chairs are comfy, free snacks and drinks. News papers and magazines. TV's with sport or other stuff. Sometimes free wifi. Desks to do work from etc. Cleaner toilets. Showers if you need them.

But sometimes i dont use it, walking around duty free kills all my free time, and then its off to my flight.

If you have to pay extra and you don't have a long wait, its not worth it.

Otherwise, it has its benefits.

Oh, I cant comment on the different lounges and which ones are better etc, i have only used the international lounges for a handful of airlines. They were pretty much all the same.

Thanks for the responses guys. As I said the lounge access will be free for me but I do need to phone Amex and activate the free priority pass for international lounges. Just wanted to know if it was worth the hassle of activating this option. American Amex card holders just need to flash their cards and they get access so it is kinda stupid that we have to call to get the priority pass

As mentioned above, it depends on how long you have to wait for your flights. If it is longer than an hour, then yes, it is worth it. I have used Joburg, Cape Town, PE and Durban's lounges so far. Much more relaxing than having to wait in the terminal.

If you have to pay extra, not worth it I think. Otherwise nice to relax waiting for a connection after a long-haul flight. Especially if they have showers, but not all of them have showers. The Gold card lounges usually have showers, but you won't have access to them with Priority Pass. Free internet is a must, although I see some of them starting to charge extra for this :(

They have........free beer - I'm always a little early for my flights, and it beats waiting in the terminals.

Overrrated in my opinion. The food in there is nothing to get excited about (what airport food is?) and you might as well sit in one of the airport restaurants.

Has anyone tried accessing lounges with your Amex cards? I red that some lounges only accept local card holders which defeats the purpose of the annual fee somewhat

I know that the one in Doha, Qatar will only accept local Amex cards.
