I have an MTN sim which I put in my iPhone 3G. I've noticed over time that slowly that airtime has been vanishing. I'm now down to less than R5. It ate up about R20. I don't use it much. It's just sitting still and losing airtime. It's my brother's and I'm just sort of trying it out before I buy an iPhone of my own. Is there an application that might be on there that's doing it? There's Viber on there, which I've suspected.

Edit: found a couple of threads on this just now in search. Thanks anyway.

If you don't have a data bundle, you're paying the out-of-bundle rate of R2/mb. So a few apps connected to the internet such as Viber/Facebook/Whatsapp can easily be the culprits at R2/mb.

They are known to be "data hungry".
Unfortunately Apple lives in a world where data volume seemingly has no meaning.
Download the OS for the iPhone - the better part of 800MB
You want the Lion OS - well you gotta download the 3GB or so.
You cant buy an apple application from the stores, you gotta - download it.
You computer as problems, co you click the "help" button, whoops, no help unless you are - online.

So best you have a data bundle for your baby, otherwise use wifi at home - if you have.

Sure. It's not unique to the iPhone. Smartphones have all sorts of processes going on that require a trickle of data. Only way to stop it is to physically turn it off.

I had a look at these other threads and after making sure push notifications was off, and the master toggle under settings was turned to off, I haven't really had any more airtime sapped that I can tell. It seems to be staying still for the time being. I think those viber notifications were probably to blame.
