My wife's phone is leaking airtime, even when the phone is switched off.
She hardly ever uses her HTC Windows 7 phone but I have had to load four tranches of Vodacom Anytime per Second at R275 each (total R1100) since 9th September. The last topup was on Thursday last week and the balance has dropped from R275 to R257 without her ever using the phone in that 6 day period.
I checked all the usual settings suspects such as ensuring the phone WI-fi is enabled, bluetooth off, internet sharing off, location off, roaming off, no APN on, find my phone off and phone update off.
Her only indulgence is to use WhatsApp occassionally but never when away from the home computer Wi-Fi. She does not have a need to send SMS messages to anyone.
The only assistance received from the Vodacom call centre was to ensure the phone update was disabled.
She has removed various apps from the phone such as Weathermaster and HTC hub to try to identify the problem source but the phone is still losing airtime. It is switched off most of the time now but the balance is reduced at every switch on.
So, any ideas out there? Who is stashing the cash?

Check for subscription services and cancel them all. Vodacom should be able to tell you if you are registered to any.

Vodacom did check that. No subscriptions happening.

That's the only way it could possibly be using airtime if your data is turned off. Register your account on vodacom's site and check for services linked to your number.

We suggest cancelling all WASP services as per above suggestions, do it like so for Vodacom:

"The network also allows its subscribers to cancel all Wasp services which are already activated on their accounts by texting “Stop All” to 30333. There is a 24-hour turnaround time. This doesn’t block future Wasp billing, it just cancels existing ones."

Thanks for helping folks.
Have sent the WASP text but obviously need time to measure the effect.
Automatic updates are off

Not maybe syncing photos or something to google drive?

Just had a note from Vodacom CC that the phone is not subscribed to any WASP services.
The search continues. The truth is out there.
