Just moved into a new place this past weekend but there is no doorbell. Looking into getting a Hikvision 4-wire analog video intercom, but distance the cable will have to run is maybe 30-40 metres snaking under ground, up wall and through garage.

The Hikvision calls for a 0.75mm^2 4-core RVV cable for 30-50m run. It comes with 0.22mm^2 15m length of RVV4 which is pretty much standard alarm cable.

Where can I get 4-core alarm cable with stranded 0.75mm^2 conductors?

At some point I'm hoping to get the Hikvision IP POE vandal-proof video intercom, but that's a lot more work and money right now.

What suburb are you in? There's plenty of alarm places around.

More money, sure.. more work, not so much, the same or less in fact.. installed my hikvision IP recently..

The price difference is not worth buying the analogue one first and the IP one later.. you would also end up having to replace the 4 wire cable with an ethernet cable as well, so additional work..

Off topic :
I remember when I first moved into my freestanding house. I had the driveway gate replaced and also a goose neck with an intercom connected into the house. If a visitor arrived , they could sit In their car and press the intercom button. Then I would open the gates from inside.

And that’s when the problem started. Every beggar and passerby felt the need to press the intercom button and ask for something. It became a real annoyance.

One day a delivery came along in a large truck. The driver bumped the goose neck and the intercom stopped working. A few days later, I removed it and never a problem again.

Yeah, I'm fine with no bell. I don't want people coming around and annoying me. :D

But my wife runs her business from here and there are usually a number of customers collecting during the day and of course the courier is here quite often.

The other unfortunate thing is that there is only the main driveway gate. No regular small entry gate. I see a new driveway gate in my future.

You are absolutely correct and I'm aware the analogue is going to be money thrown away. But the ethernet wiring is going to take a while to get sorted.

The IP setup comes out around R5k as the indoor and outdoor units are sold separately. Right now the analogue can be had for R1.5k.

Truth is, the more techy IP setup would be for me (cool things like recording to the DVR, accessible at network device, etc), but the reality is that the analogue setup would be just fine for my wife's purposes.

Forgot to ask, but which Hikvision setup did you get?

My wife was sold when I told her we could record the video feed to our NVR and the indoor station can take voicemail as well as a picture of anyone ringing the bell and she can also see who is at the gate and open it form her phone..

Indoor station: https://www.geewiz.co.za/intercoms/...44&sfdr_hash=9e8b7fce08576059e8b099d512c05a5d

Outdoor station: (seems to be discontinued?)

That's a very nice unit Indeed.
I might go for the more basic DS-KH6210-L instead along with the vandal-proof camera unit. Been shopping around and I can maybe get it in under R4k. Still a lot for a doorbell right now as I need the money for the rest of the network and other work around here.

But then spending now is the same as spending later. :) Besides, my wife wants to head out to Builders tomorrow to see what they have and I know the analogue unit they have is 2.5k. Not doing that. If it's going to be analogue then it's going to be the Hikvision R1.3k unit.

The current CCTV install here is all analogue Dahua. IP door setup will have to run isolated until I can tie in the rest of the house.

Going to have to think about it, but if it is going to be a mission just finding decent size cable for this distance I have to run then yeah maybe just go IP from the start.

Also opted not to go for a door bell and intercom.

We have cameras right round the house and I can usually see people as they arrive.

For “certain” people I have hidden a wireless door bell behind a slat in the gate so if they arrive and I dont see them on the cameras they can press it and Im 99% sure its someone I want to open up for.

Just got made to cough up R28k today on new appliances today. Trusty old Ellie's wireless bell is going to have to do until next month.

Everyone I need to open for has my phone number. No need for a button at the gate.
