Hi,

How much is a standard basic alarm system?

I ask because the place I'm renting out has an old alarm (late 90's ...) and the current tenant says my old alarm is FUBAR. A security company says they'll send someone to assess the old alarm for R600.00 and then quote on what needs to be replaced.

I thought a basic was like R4,000 so 15% just to tell me I need everything? Or is my thinking kinda late 90s on the price as well?

So depends on what the size of your place is, but a decent paradox alarm system for a house probably starts at about 7k.

The assessment fee is a rip off. Get a private guy.

Get another company to check and quote - no security company should charge you just for quoting. Checking your existing setup and quoting on additions/new systems should be free.

What is a "standard basic alarm system"?
Four indoor PIR's, control panel, siren and a remote?
How many zones do you need to cover?

A basic four zone PIR kit is in the R7000 to R10000 range excluding labour.
An eight zone wireless PIR kit is closer to R20000 excluding labour.

Not a simple answer.
It's like a client asking you how much is a "standard basic" Riverbed Steelhead implementation.

My definition of a standard system is a panel that can communicate via IP or GSM, outside beams covering most entrances and windows, inside beams covering every room, door contacts on every external door, link up to electric fence and that has a keypad that is readable (no led lights to represent zones, at the minimum a text readout).

My Paradox system that included all the above came to around R17k before installation, less than a year ago.

Nice explanation ;)

Yea, was thinking something like that.

It's a property I rent out and will probably sell when I can. Although I'd love to spend R17,000 on an alarm linked to GSM networks with colour LCD screens, I can't bring myself do it in a rental unit where they'll probably fsck it up in a year anyhow.

So seems around R7k.

Paradox sells online and I just get an accredited installer will probably be the best option?

Ah, I see. It's not for your personal security. Then it's fine to get that 4 pir system. Get one that has wireless capability (not that much more expensive) and tell your tenants they're welcome to install additional wireless beams and take them when they leave

Nah - I'm a gadget guy. If it was mine, I'd have these with custom floor plans etc
