Hi guys.

Still have my trusty 2005 velociti 1.4i.

There was always a problem with the alarm going off at odd times an for no particular reason. But this has got a lot worse of late. So much so that one night it kept going off every ten mins. So for the sanity of the neighbours' sake i disconnected the hooter. That is to say i tried to disconnect it but could not get the plug out of its socket. So i ended up just cutting the cables leading to the hooter.

There is also the problem of the car stalling. This has now become a real issue. It cuts out completely about twice a day and every time i come to a halt the revs drop to around 500 if it does not stall. I have removed all my car audio and tried it with nothing turned on and nothing helped.

I am advised that the two issues are related and there is a quick and cheap fix.

Can anyone advise? I dont want to be bent over by the auto-electricians i take the car to ito price and advice.

Thanks! :)

Had a similiar problem on my 2005 Tazz. Alarm would go off in the middle of the night and it would lose power to its battery. Initially I sorted out the alternator, and then later discovered that it was some sort of a short circuit. But whatever it is, it definitely sounds like an electrical fault.

It's almost certainly a bad electrical connection from the battery. Check for corrosion first - disconnect the battery, clean the terminals and clamps, and reconnect. Go over the circuits with a multimeter looking for voltage drop / resistance before & after if you want a proper debugging session.

The low idle revs may or may not be electrical.

Indeed. I also thought electrical. When i last took it in to the auto electrician to have something else fixed, i told him about this issue and he was so sure it wasmy sound system draining the battery. Though i assured him i hadnt had this problem in all the time i had had the car or te system.

Cool. Thanks. I shall give all that a try this eve and report back.

Quirky alarm personal experience : my alarm in my bakkie would go off at odd times in the night as well, and couldnt figure out what was going on , until one night decided to envestigate a little further, found that there was a moth about the size of a R5 coin stuck in the cab, and when it fluttered around near the sensor it set it off :)

Wrt to the idling issue maybe check you idle screw setting on the carburetor, these sometimes work loose and seat themselves deaper, (or loosen, depending on carb design) thereby making the accelerator cable extend past the minimum idle setting and the car chokes off.

Thanks for the tip. And the pic. Had a quick look this morn and could not locate either of these screws. Such a noob. Have taken a pic of engine. Cannot seem to upload it here. :(

Car stalls a lot. Maybe every third or fourth time i come to a halt if i dont rev it just before.

The battery terminals and wires look the same as they always have.

Probably not gonna get a chance to take the car in today either.

I would be very worried if you did find the screws. Your car is fuel injected.

Most probably a problem with your throttle body - might be the idle motor that is at the end of its life, or it could just need an adaptation run. Would be easier to say once your car has been scanned for error codes.

Ah. Then i dont feel so bad. :) will take her in for a check up next week..

The alarm just went off randomly. So it seems i have only diasabled the hooter. Does that mean there is a second hooter just for the alarm? Cos i dont see any more cables going to this hooter...
