Was watching "Deadliest Catch" & wondering if anyone here has eaten this repulsive looking creature, and what it tastes like ?

Nope - but I'd give it a shot.

99% of the "crab" sold in SA is flavoured fish meat (the roundish sticks with the pink strip on the side). Sorta like fish sticks but ten times more expensive.

Yep ......... once you taste the real thing over those sticksofpoop, you'll do backflips at the taste.

well, I can say that I have tried them when I lived in Alaska as a teenager and they are scrumdillyitious good!!!! there was a place my parents use to take us too that had all you can eat crab legs.

Crab sticks have no crab meat.
I eat crab about 3 - 4 times a year.
I tasted king crab off a friends plate at the one and only restaurant in Cape Town, it was quite good. Think the restaurants name is Nobu.

Yep. There used to be a fish shop called Oceanfresh in Fourways next to the builders warehouse, they sold the King Crab legs, at around R500 a packet (about 2kg's of crustacean leg and a bit of meat). Had it again in Singapore with Black Pepper sauce and it was even better than when I made it.

Fun to eat cos you need the crab tools and a bib, its messy and tasty, but expensive, but worth it!

Food Lover's Market Sells Alaskan King Crab. Its something crazy like R615 p/kg. Definitely shop around if you are going to try it. Flipping awesome though. Be sure to make a butter and garlic sauce, with lots of lemon.

There is also a fantastic fishery close to Northgate, in Deco Park. Give them a try. Its called Fisherman's Deli. Have lunch there as well, they make the best fish in chips I have ever had in JHB.

They are yummy but Florida stone crab claws have more delish and chunky meat IMHO and you don't be needing a chopstick to push the meat through a tube. You just crush them with a Crab Hammer ans BONUS you dont have to kill the crab. They grow Moar.

Harvesting is accomplished by removing one or both claws from the live animal and returning it to the ocean where it can regrow the lost limb(s). To be kept, claws must be 2.75 inches (70 mm) long, measured from the tips of the immovable finger to the first joint. However, mortality rates are 47% for doubly-amputated crabs and 28% for single amputees.[

We used to catch crabs in the Transkei rivers along the Wild coast, huge things, was never around when they where cooked but was there to eat.
Now you need license I think to catch them, our crab trap cage rusted to bits when I was studying.
Keen to try it again actually.

So you spend R615/kg for King Crab just to overpower it with a sauce? Why not stick with the crab sticks?

I like crab but I'll take a big Maine lobster any day.

I'll take a big Connemara (Irish West Coast) lobster over a big Maine lobster anytime, and I'll take wild Irish smoked salmon over any Norwegian or Scottish salmon. Wild tastes better and costs a $$$$$$$ more.
It sucks being Poor.
