Hey guys,

Has anyone brought in an Alexa from the US? If so can you possibly provide the import duties that you paid? It seems much cheaper on Amazon. The only worry I have is that you'll probably get 110V power adapter. Would appreciate if someone can shed some light on this.

Which device are you referring to? Alexa is on a few devices.

I assume you are referring to the Amazon Echo device. There are a few for sale on the website. They are not the latest version that was just released but they do serve the purpose.

I was referring to the echo apologies for not including it in my first post. I saw they have a few available but I would like to know what the import duties are if I bring it in to SA.

You can try the .de site instead of the .com site. You will receive a Euro plug (it may be a two-prong) and can save on import duties. Amazon calculates your taxes for you at checkout. If its over they will refund you but its generally very close. It will also clear customs easier with Amazon. Haven't made use of other companies for imports other than Amazon.

I'm almost sure none of the official Amazon Alexa devices ship to SA

I've ordered some from the USA and UK. The older model Echo dot uses a standard micro USB cable that most phones used to use and you can use that with an old charger, whereas the new models use annoying unique cable that is attached the US/UK charger that will require an adapter.

So it is probably safer just to buy it in SA?

We imported some on behalf of a client, these are duty free (VAT only). Cannot comment on the power adapters.

I bought an Echo (2nd Generation) from a guy on BidorBuy. Got it the next day and it included the SA plug adapter. I'm quite happy with it. I've occasionally seen them on One Day Only as well.

Voltage and Hertz are normally (edit.. for the echo range) compatible 110/240V & 50/60Hz . You can google replacement powersupplies to confirm.

So it should just be the plug that needs converting:

remember there is a good chance you will also be hit with VAT when it enters RSA

I ordered a 3rd generation Dot for $30 directly from Amazon in January 2019 and used Aramex Global Shopper as the forwarder. My custom fees was R236.45.

I just bought a three prong USB plug from Taekalot and it is working fine.

Okay cool - so the Dot has a power supply that works for 110V-220V?
