Could be a tad bit emo, but check this out. Something we all know, but nice to have an angle on it again.:)

The last wishes of Alexander the Great:

On his death bed, Alexander summoned his generals and told them his three ultimate wishes:

  1. The best doctors should carry his coffin
  2. The wealth he has accumulated (money, gold, precious stones…) should be scattered along the procession to the cemetery
  3. His hands should be let loose, hanging outside the coffin for all to see!!

One of his general who was surprised by these unusual requests asked Alexander to explain.

Here is what Alexander the Great had to say:

  1. I want the best doctors to carry my coffin to demonstrate that, in the face of death, even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal
  2. I want the road to be covered with my treasure so that everybody sees that material wealth acquired on earth, stays on earth...
  3. I want my hands to swing in the wind, so that people understand that we come to this world empty handed and we leave this world empty handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is TIME

We do not take to our grave any material wealth, although our good deeds can be our travelers’ checks. TIME is our most precious treasure because it is LIMITED. We can produce more wealth, but we cannot produce more time.

When we give someone our time, we actually give a portion of our life that we will never take back. Our time is our life!

He who dies with the most toys still dies.

In the interest of accuracy though, I'd like to point out that the chances of that being accurate are zero. We don't know what killed him or what day he died, let alone his dying words. Also...no coffins...just tombs. Coffins are a fairly modern invention.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Don't know it's validity. My SO emailed this to me the other day from work.
Whatever, it's still great.

This speech appeared for the first time in The Times newspaper during the mid 1860's and was attributed to some British Museum scholars who were working in Greece at the time. Its provenance was never proved but was said to be included in a final statement when he was in Babylon when Alexander was about 31 years old and had an idea that his luck may have been running out. These same scholars also found evidence that he was homosexual but suppressed it so that it was only revealed in around 1996. In 1860 it was not thought proper that a man could be homosexual. It is still a profound statement and reflects the rare honesty of a true, if bloodthirsty leader. His was the largest empire that had existed until that time
