Alfa Romeo is expected to reveal a new compact SUV tomorrow morning at the Geneva motor show, according to sources in Italy.

Italian media suggests the car, thought to be called Tonale, will be electrified and will be previewed by a recognisable concept car during Alfa’s press conference, which starts at 10am UK time.

Tonale is the name of a mountain pass in northern Italy, which sits at an altitude of 1883 metres. The Stelvio pass (which lends its name to the firm’s larger SUV) sits another 900 feet higher. Speculation is rife that the use of this name, seen on the firm’s stand by journalists given early access to the show, confirms a smaller SUV will be revealed.

Alfa’s parent company, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), announced plans to build two new SUVs alongside a new GT4 coupé and 8C sports car, by 2022. Launching the small SUV first would be crucial given the segment’s popularity.

Serving as a smaller sibling to the Stelvio, which has sold well alongside relatively weak sales of non-SUV models such as the Giulia and Giulietta, the new model is said to be the priority car to be launched by new group CEO Mike Manley. Manley is credited with putting the Jeep brand back into a position of strength by launching more attainable SUV models, such as the Renegade.

Details of the new Alfa Romeo are scarce, but we can expect it to share styling cues and interior details with the Stelvio, while it’s unclear as yet if it will use that car’s platform or move to a more affordable front-wheel-drive layout. ‘Alfa Romeo Tonale Leaks’ Is Your Most Disturbing Sounding Car Phrase of the Day

The Greek division of Autoblog hires some ballsy writers, since they managed to get into the Geneva Auto Show a bit earlier than everyone else, where they saw the Alfa Romeo booth being put together. In that booth they saw a big sign that revealed Alfa’s new, very likely Renegade-based small crossover’s name. It’s Tonale.

The booth just had an actual Jeep Renegade on the stand, which was likely standing in for the Tonale, pretty much confirming that the new crossover will be a re-badged and likely re-bodied Renegade.

The name “Tonale” could be from the Italian word “tonale,” which just means a musical tone, or, more likely, is in reference to Italy’s Tonale Pass, a mountain pass in Northern Italy that is known for skiing and I suppose is a likely place buyers of Alfa Romeo Tonales may take their all-wheel-drive little crossovers, with skis on the roof and many sweaters packed in the hatch.

So, there you go: It’ll be an Alfa Romeo Tonale.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale Won't Be Just a Re-Badged Renegade After All

Damn, it looks like I may owe Alfa Romeo an apology. See, I, like almost everyone else, seems to have assumed that their new crossover, the Tonale, would just be a sort of half-ass re-badging of a Renegade. I even made a silly graphic to that effect on that other story there. Well, thanks once again to our bold Greek friends at Autoblog Greece, I now know that I’m very wrong. I know this because they have pictures of the car before it’s officially to be shown, and it doesn’t look like a re-badged Renegade at all.

Now, to be fair, it’s still very likely based on the Rengade platform, in some context, but the design of the Alfa is significantly different. Most notably, it appears much larger, with a much longer front overhang, a longer hood, and what appears to be a longer body overall.

The wheelbase may be the same, but the overall effect is dramatically different than the Renegade.

The picture we have is pretty blurry, but it gives a good sense of the general look and proportions of the crossover. Some frontal details, like the headlamp design and some general grille-shape detail can be seen under the sheets:

It looks like there’s six DRLs making angular headlamp shapes of descending size from center outward, and a large, prominent Alfa triangular grille at the center.

We’ll get to see it better soon, but for now, all we need to know is that it won’t look like a Renegade with a triangular grille and a badge of a snake eating a dude.

Alfa Romeo unveils new Tonale PHEV compact SUV

Italian firm vows new sub-Stelvio model will offer advanced driving dynamics

Alfa Romeo has previewed its first compact SUV with the new Tonale plug-in hybrid, unveiled at the Geneva motor show.

The Tonale, which sits below the Stelvio in the Italian firm's SUV range, is set to use a hybrid system that will be introduced in the Jeep Renegade shortly.

Alfa Romeo boss Tim Kuniskis promised that the Tonale would be a compact SUV "like no other, that will embrace our core brand principals: advanced engine technology, electrification, distance proportions and stunning Italian design." He claimed: "We will not launch just another CUV. We will launch a CUV as only Alfa can."

Kuniskis said the Tonale concept showed what the compact Alfa "could" look like and vowed that the hybrid powertrain would be used to enhance the driving experience, rather than just helping the firm meet CO2 emissions targets. "We've put the driver at the centre, with incredible steering feel," he said. "The Tonale will have a distinct personality and timeless design that evokes the passion of its designers."

Alfa says the Tonale's powertrain has been developed to offer "the best driving dynamics in the segment", with a front mounted petrol engine and a rear-mounted electric motor. Alfa has yet to give details of the power output of the system. The Renegade PHEV revealed at Geneva by sister firm Jeep features a 236bhp powertrain, although given Alfa's performance brief any model it offers would likely have significantly more.

Alfa says that the concept features a new version of its infotainment system, including a new multitasking interface.

While Alfa gave no indication when a production of the Tonale might go into production, the firm's product plan revealed last year said that it would have a compact SUV on sale by 2022.

Alfa Romeo has whipped the covers off its fresh-faced Tonale concept at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, previewing a new compact SUV from the Italian brand.

Billed as its first plug-in hybrid as well as its first compact SUV (thus set to slot in neatly below the Stelvio), the Tonale concept shows off what Alfa Romeo describes as the brand’s “unmistakable, original and modern style”.

While the automaker has not shared specific details around plans for the production model’s powertrain, it does confirm the plug-in hybrid system will offer a full electric mode.

The concept rides on 21-inch lightweight alloys (which Alfa fans will no doubt have noticed were inspired by those worn by the 33 Stradale), while its front end sports a lighting arrangement that harks back to that employed by the Brera.

Alfa Romeo Tonale concept previews new mid-sized SUV

It’s no secret that Alfa Romeo is working on a mid-sized SUV that will slot beneath the Stelvio, and now we have a much better idea of how it’s going to look.

Alfa Romeo pulled the covers off its new Tonale concept car at the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday, and the production vehicle is likely to share most of its design cues as well as its name with the show car. Tonale? Well that’s the name of a mountain pass in the Alps, situated close to the Stelvio Pass, after which Alfa named its larger SUV.

It has been widely reported that the Tonale production vehicle will be crafted around the front-wheel-drive platform that underpins the Jeep Compass, rather than the RWD premium architecture that forms the basis of the Stelvio and Giulia.

The concept is powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, a first for Alfa Romeo, and although the company has not gone into detail on the system, sister-brand Jeep has just revealed its Compass and Renegade hybrid models, and we’d imagine the Alfa’s drivetrain would be similar. The Jeep system mates a 1.3-litre turbopetrol engine to an electric motor for system outputs of up to 177kW, which is not inconsiderable even by Alfa Romeo standards.

While its power source embraces the future, the Tonale concept car still honours the past in many of its design features, including 21-inch ‘telephone dial’ wheels that are a nod to the 1960s 33 Stradale, ‘3 plus 3’ headlights that pay tribute to the SZ and body lines that take inspiration from the Duetto and Disco Volante Spider.

The cabin is a blend of classic and modern features, with a deep-set digital instrument cluster and wide central infotainment screen. It also has apps to keep the Alfisti well connected, such as the ‘Alfista’ interface that provides updates about select Alfa Romeo clubs and community events, and the ‘Paddock’ app that allows owners to browse and purchase various accessories and vehicle upgrades.

Alfa Romeo's new hope for sales success, the Tonale small SUV, appears to have leaked online in close-to-production form well ahead of its unveiling next year.

Images reportedly showing the finished or near-finished design have been posted online, seemingly first by an Italian car forum before being widely shared on social media.

They reveal the car bears a resemblance to the original Geneva motor show concept, but with a number of changes. At the front, the split between the bonnet and front bumper has grown, accomodating more conventional headlights.

The rear window has grown in size, too, while the tail-lights are thicker. The overall proportions remain the same, however.

Set to be unveiled as a production model some time in the middle of 2020 before arriving in showrooms at the end of the year, the Tonale made its UK public debut in concept form at the Goodwood Festival of Speed back in July. It will be a challenger to the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.

The SUV, which will sit below the Stelvio in the Alfa Romeo range, and which takes its name from another famous Italian mountain pass (this one lower and in the Rhaetian Alps), will be the brand's first car to offer plug-in hybrid technology.

Alfa Romeo is banking on its SUVs to pull them out of the doldrums and while the bigger Stelvio has received good reviews, sales haven't exactly taken off. Now Alfa Romeo has been looking at the smaller luxury SUV market. The Alfa Romeo Tonale concept was revealed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and it was striking!

However, as is mostly the case, the production version loses some of the concept's flamboyance. Thanks to these images from an Italian car forum, we now get a good look at what's to come. The source suggests these photos came from an internal meeting where the Tonale's rivals were compared and you can see other cars in the background.

Alfa Romeo working on baby SUV to rival T-Cross - report

Alfa Romeo is working on a new baby SUV that will go up against the Audi Q2, Nissan Juke and Volkswagen T-Cross, Auto Express reports.

This will be the third crossover type vehicle to be launched by the Italian carmaker that’s famed for its driver-focused saloons and coupes, following the Giulia-based Stelvio that’s been on the market since 2016 and the Tiguan-rivalling Tonale that’s set to be revealed soon.

But whereas the mid-sized Tonale is expected to be based around the Jeep Compass, the new baby SUV is likely to take advantage of owner Fiat Chrysler’s new alliance with the PSA Group, thereby slotting onto the B-segment platform that underpins the new Peugeot 2008 and 208 models as well as the Opel Corsa.

This would be a strategic move in more ways than one. Given that Peugeot and Opel have already announced EV versions of the aforementioned cars, it would be easy to electrify the new Alfa. In fact, the upcoming model will be Alfa Romeo’s first all-electric vehicle, says Auto Express. In power and range terms it should be identical to the PSA vehicles, with an output of 100kW and the ability to cover around 300km between charges.

It’s almost 2 years since the concept of the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the smaller sibling to the Stelvio executive SUV, debuted at the Geneva Show and, against the backdrop of the approved merger of FCA and PSA comes news that the newcomer is finally coming to market in November.

When Alfa Romeo was under the leadership of the late Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) chairman Sergio Marchionne, the group invested a reported $1 billion in the rear-wheel-drive Giorgio platform, which underpins the current Giulia and Stelvio, to spearhead yet another attempt to re-establish the Milanese brand in North America.

This move, which ultimately failed, spelt the end for the Mito and Guilietta, the latter of which was finally discontinued last year. However, FCA subsequently conceded that in order to safeguard the future of Alfa Romeo in a market dominated by crossovers, it had to produce at least 1, perhaps 2, SUV-inspired front-wheel-drive family cars, for which, of course, the Giorgio platform isn’t suitable.

Long-awaited compact SUV has been delayed by three months as new boss demands better PHEV

The Alfa Romeo Tonale won’t enter production until early in 2022, with its planned launch later this year pushed back by several months.

A report from Automotive News Europe suggests the delay is the result of new CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato demanding better performance from the plug-in hybrid version of the new small SUV.

The Frenchman was put in charge of the brand in January this year following the merger of parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) with the PSA Group, creating the new multinational Stellantis.

He was previously the boss of Peugeot and was credited with taking the manufacturer from near-bankruptcy to a highly profitable position.

The Tonale was revealed for the first time at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show in the form of a concept, and images of a production-ready model leaked in October that year.

It will use the same platform as that of the Jeep Compass. Plug-in hybrid variants of the off-roader are powered by a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine and an electric motor, with available outputs of 187bhp and 237bhp. Using an 11.4kWh battery, its electric-only driving range amounts to 30 miles.
