Has anyone been to Algeria as a tourist?

Someone very highly recommended it to me. Even more than e.g. Morocco or Egypt.

If you have been there, what is your take?

I am a Francophile, so the colonial architecture appeals to me, the easy access to the desert, and also the favourable exchange rate.

I'm just gonna leave this here. It's a political map of North Africa, to assist any 'muricans, or anyone else who might be confused as to where Algeria is.

Do they have beer there? If not, how is it possible to holiday there?

Do check Jason Billam's channel. He was done a few videos on Algeria, Tunisia, etc.

It's highly likely that the person secretly hates @Candystore and therefore wanted them to potentially get lost in the desert of the 10th largest country in the world - and the largest country on the African continent!

It should be noted that we have people on where who would never go to Thailand simply because it's considered a 3rd world country.

How is it better than Morocco?
Morocco looks epic.

Yes we have been there, and to Morocco. Algeria was dirty and smelly, the roads were awful and the inhabitants unpleasant. However, Egypt was worse. Dead donkeys lying in the street, beggars galore. You cannot even drink their bottled water

Morocco on the other hand is well run, not really that expensive. We also stayed with a fellow who is a plastic surgeon and lives in a better suburb of Rabat. He lent us his Mercedes 4X4 as well

The shops are well stocked. You can use Euros to trade and French is widely spoken

There are some interesting Roman ruins which are worth a visit

We also went to Tunisia. Better than Algeria. The runway was dodgy and the plane hit a few potholes

Also a place I wanna go
It is a very well-functioning country from what I could see when I was there.

Casablanca was very modern and more folks there spoke French than in there other towns. Obviously Casablanca has its "old town" but I think that is more of a tourist attraction than anything else.

Marrakech, or at least the medina (the walled old town) is as exotic as people describe it. Almost all the accommodation was in the form of riads: a home with multiple stories centered around an open-air courtyard. So stunning!

A little confusing since you were talking about two countries: are those two sentences referring to Algeria or Morocco?

For me, if I were to travel to those countries, I'd more likely go with Morocco. That is if I had to be forced to choose, they (Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia) all don't tickle my travelling bone. There seem to be more headaches for travellers in all of them bar maybe Morocco.

Thanks. I always wanted to visit Egypt but I will give it a miss. I have heard similar comments from many. Algeria was never on my radar.
