All cellphone stores must shut down during lockdown

South Africa’s Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams has clarified that network operators must close their physical stores during the coronavirus lockdown.

This information comes from a letter which MTN circulated to its stores today to inform them of the instruction from the minister.

An essential service that is only 90% essential not 100% essential. Wow an new world first for South Africa. Not sure where MTN plan to get the call center staff to replace the Shop staff. Surely some training/experience is required (and takes some time to deploy) for the position. And the call center is in Joburg, right? So no access to anyone in Cape Town or Durban. No more grabbing suitably qualified staff from neighboring MTN countries MTN either. Oh, well, at least keeps me at home waiting on hold. Surely a better option would have been to reduce the number of stores and provide support services only.

Yeah, for some it's their only way of communicating with the outside world. Should be considered an essential item these days. At least one per household. I wonder if the Pick n Pays etc. will still sell cheapies? Most of us have spares, but not everyone.
But us elite 10% always keep a spare (even if its just one spare for a couple, rather then one spare each), we know from Steve Jobs all about "planned obsolescence". Plus the other 90% are very good with tape and glue and soldering iron and don't need all of the screen real estate anyway. Like Stella, South Africans are truly inventive and can always "make a plan".

Question: can one still RICA in a PnP? Does one still need to RICA? Did Stella say anything about that?
