Hi all,

I am starting to get gatvol with the myriad of gizmos that I have in the landy: MP3 receiver, Garmin Quest GPS unit and a cheap LCD popup screen for the rear-view camera.

The time has come to find a neat solution to all these, but the question is: is there even one?

I have found the Pioneer MVH (R2800) and Philips CED (R1900) series. These are single-DIN decks with built-in 3" screens that also do Bluetooth and support rear-view cameras. Going that route means still having the Garmin unit separate, which is not a train smash seeing I only use it when going overland.

I see Caska do all-in-one solutions such as this: http://www.planetworld.co.za/[email protected], but they are not single-DIN and they are moerse expensive, around R11,000!!! Plus going that route would entail cutting the dash to make the double-DIN unit fit plus I'm not too sure how they would survive the corrugations in the Kgalagadi!

U guys have any advice for me? Would really appreciate it :)

CarPC, google it.

Build a neat shock absorbant/resistant type enclosure. Bit of DIY

Yeah true I suppose, probably why I havent built one either:) That said nothing will give you as much customisation options as a carPC.
Bit of work would let you monitor different aspects of your vehicle, control equipment etc. could be quite useful.

In terms of the rearview mirror option, dont you think it will be a bit small, I would find it irritating I think

Parrot (guys who make the AR Drone and BT headsets) were working on a Android based single-DIN head unit. Not sure what the latest progress of it is.

Looks great but no support for external video input.

At the moment the GPS is not really required in the unit - I have a Quest which is loaded with Garmap & Tracks4Africa. What I really want is something that takes an RCA video input and displays the video from the reversing camera without cluttering the dash with a cheap LCD screen.

that's why the Philips CED series is looking good: it has built-in support for reverse camera via RCA input. I'm assuming this means if the RCA input goes live, it shows that on the screen on top of other stuff.

Went to 2 audio shops yesterday and they gave the following advice

Shop 1

Seeing that the screen is only required for reversing, no need to upgrade the deck. They will source a better screen that can be mounted permanently and looks like an OEM unit. They do recommend that I put in one of those slimline Pioneer amp/sub combo to get a better sound:

Shop 2
They have the Kenwood KIV 700 in stock at a very good price and they say they can fit it in such a way that the screen displays the reverse camera image when reversing. They will even set it up and test it and only charge me if I decide to take it.

So now it's decision time - what to do?

Kinda off topic but the cheapest way to get DVD viewing in ones car

And DVD Front Loader...small 3" screen & not the best known brand though

Can you currently see to the back of your vehicle using the rear view mirror?
I only ask because our 4X4 is setup in such a way with the canopy and roof tent that you cant use the rear view mirror anymore.

So what we did was installed a normal/nightvision Camera in the back of the canopy.
Installed a normal LCD screen (think its a 4") where the rear view mirror was.
Connected the source on the reverse gear switch.
So if you switch in reverse the screen will come up where the camera feed is always on.

Now if you position the lcd screen somewhere you canalos plug in external RCA cables in there to use the screen for different things.

Just an Idea
