Between 1996 and 2005, Eskom maintained an EAF of between 88% and 93%. It averaged over 90% for most years.

However, from 2006 onward, the EAF began to decline, and by 2008 it had fallen to 85%. It was also when load-shedding first hit.

What was happening at that time in Eskom? I'll give you a clue, it's racist.

ESKOM is a sick puppy, just looking at their business model and numerous 'Take or Pay' IPP contracts, continued wasteful expenditure, ever increasing executive packages and overstaffing to name just a few of the many issues, it is easy to see why it is failing. Talk of reducing the cost of electricity is double speak, what will likely happen is that the individual cost of electricity will come down, but the fixed costs will escalate meaning you pay more than you do now for less electricity with the state saying, "but look you used to pay R4.00 KWH, but now you are only paying R3.00 KWH so it cheaper", even though your fixed costs have taken you total bill from R1500.00 a month to R3000.00 a month.
