That's unfortunate :(
The link shows differences between the openserve map FWIW.
Thanks anyway.

I got so excited the first time I saw this map (might have actually been the DFA map), because there is a fiber line running past my front door, but alas...

There should be one map that shows xdsl, fibre, wifi/wisp, 3g/4g etc for all providers. can't be that hard to do but i suspect that they would not like to contribute.

Harder than you'd think. If you pay LOTS of money, then it is pretty simple from a software side, but maps and data is big business, and companies want to sell product. Free mapping tools I used 1 year ago now cost $10 per layer generation, because they realised the value of the data they were giving away.

Nevermind the fact that coverage maps are harder to extract data from, and each provider has an interest in keeping that data on their own server.

Then you run into the need for upkeep of the data, which is a full time job keeping updated. Not even Openserve update their maps often, and they can't be sure of exactly where things are from an infrastructure POV.

I was at the launch of Telkom's NetData / NetPlan project many moons ago. The objective was to map their entire cable network. At least 15 years later and they still have not completed the exercise.

This is quite interesting http://www.iconnectsa.co.za/ftth/

I think it's quite old now though because I don't think it has changed much in the last 6months. Seems like iConnect has removed it from their site, I assume it's a headache to maintain.

How does one actually know when things are happening?

I've been seeing a lot of digging around town and I can only hope it's fibre.

They(Fibre companies) will usually start setting up posters on lampposts, flyers in mailboxes etc ! Don't worry they will let you know :D

I think it's Openserve so I feel like they won't let me know and then one day I'll just check and see it's live.

I don't want to listen to the rumours of people saying it's fibre but the digging did start around my and the next neighbourhood where the two MSAN's are and the last I saw them digging they were heading for the exchange building in town.
