Hey

So I need to have allergy tests done for local anaesthetics. I had 2 allergic reactions at the dentist in the last 2 years where the last one stopped them from finishing what they were busy with. Basically, I pass out, which is not supposed to happen :D

Where can I go to have this done in Pretoria? I don't want to do the whole allergy test thing, just the anaesthetics and maybe other meds for good measure.

Should I go through my doctor or is there a direct path to follow?

Doctor has to request them and any of the Ampath/Lancet labs can do it I think. We did general allergy tests on my son via his paediatrician a while back, just keep in mind it is not cheap. My son's tests (Which where covering all basic allergies) cost over 10K I think.

God damn...I just want to test which of the crap they inject into me will kill me one day and MAAAYBE, prevent it :erm:

And the cost outweighs the result?

There is a test called the Cholinesterase test which is a test to see if you are allergic to this substance which is apparently found in local anaesthetics. But speaking to some lab people they suggest to rather see a doctor as there are a host of other things that could be the cause of your allergic reaction.

It's a skin prick test, doctors can do it.

Just check with your GP. They clean your arm and put little droplets in different sections then break the skin with a needle. If you are allergic to the substance you will get a an itchy hive. Simple, not intrusive but takes about an hour.

Could be a phobia for dentists that kicked in the last minute :p

Obviously not

Not impossible :D

Thanks! I'll go see my GP then.

Just for an update, got the tests done. There are 2 local anaesthetics used in SA (there are others but these are the most commonly used ). Lidocaine and Mepivacaine.

I'm not allergic. Apparently I'm just a wuss and the needles make my body go into shock and I pass out :p

Which is weird because last time, I felt very calm even though I could feel my heart racing >.<
