I have a mag wheel that is cracked and it is bent/warped a bit from climbing the kerb. If I repair it, will it give me any issues later?

(Agents want 4k for a single mag wheel...eish.)

Got a quote for R650 from a local guy. What I want to know is will repairing the mag and fitting it to a new tyre give me any future hassles? I heard bad stuff about repaired mags hence my post.

Never had to replace one. Sorry. I don't hit curbs :D

If they know what they doing, there's no need to worry.

Cant you find a 2nd hand replacement at junkyards etc? I would assume a damaged alloy wheel like that would cause trouble in the long run if repaired

Wheel collision centre. Lots of agents take their wheels there. Off Modderfontein Road. I've used them twice for cracked rims. They accept walk in clients. THey are brilliant and also do x-ray checking. About R800

Where are they located?

Edit: I'm in Durban

I would prefer not to repair a mag like that. Slightly buckled is one thing, but the crack is a problem. Alloys like that cannot be easily welded, and somebody who is qualified to do it will charge a lot more than R800. If you have no other choice you can have it repaired, but for peace of mind i would buy a new mag.

Some more advice:
The location of the crack: The only type of crack that I believe is even marginally safe to weld is one on the back, or inboard side of the wheel. A crack on the front face of the wheel compromises the structural integrity of the wheel, as does a crack on one of the spokes. A crack inside the barrel is also inadvisable to weld.

Find out if there are any specials going at your local tire shops. For R4k you can almost get a new set of 4 mags + tires. Keep the other 3 as spares or sell.

I found a lekker place in Sydney road that my friend recommended. Took the wheel and mag in today at 8am and they are sorting it out for R850. Thats the place where most of the Agents take bent/damaged mags for repairs!

To think I saved R3000 by going direct... eish!

I have "curb rash" on my wheel.
Which is the place to go in Durban.
I've heard of wheelcrafters and eagle.
Any advice.

Is this on your toy out of interest?

If so, make sure you chose carefully....

I've heard of good things in relation to Total Rebuild

Yep. Drove over a very shallow curb I didn't see and due to the low profile tyres the rim got grazed. If it were higher profile tyres then only the tyre would have been scraped.

Clearly you don't deserve to own such a fine machine, I think you should give it to me to look after for you :p

But for that kind of damage, I'd suggest getting in touch with Total Rebuild, they should be able to do a decent job.
