So today, our last employee in the office left the Apple ecosystem to join us on the droid side, with his purchase of a galaxy S2 (a significant upgrade from his iphone). So now, all the desktops bar one (the bloody graphics designer) run Ubuntu linux and every single phone is a linux android device. Our NAS`s, routers, PABX and servers are all Linux.

When I think back to 10 years ago when only the router wouldla being linux.... I think how far Linux has come in such a short time. It completely dominates our office. We dont run antiviruses, our systems dont get trojans or spyware. Our downtime is minimal and I feel more secure in our data (we dont allow the graphics designer running MS access to sensitive shares).

:p

Awesome, we're doing ICT strategy meeting next week, to document a strategy which will include migrating and phasing out 150 odd MS workstations and the last two remaining Windows server. Only a VM Windows server will eventually be left running to accommodate MS SQL.

Be careful, I would recommend you run AV, like ClamAV, Linux viruses do exist.

We are quite far behind you on that I am afraid.

Mainly because of Pastel and windows specific graphics design programs.

Slowly adding linux based machines as needed though.

Ive never seen a virus for a patched system. The day the next update happens, the virus no longer has room to exist.

Though we will probally install AV`s, simply because our systems have no way of checking flash disks or other removable media that come from the herpes infect MS home machines. So we often find ourselves passing on that virus as we have no way to monitor it. I know one of our file shares .. all the exe`s got infected by a previous windows machine on the network and we had no way of noticing that until I took a phone home and my gaming machine went bananas over the exe`s I had copied from the nas.

So while I am not worried about linux getting an infection, you do raise a valid point.

I'm all for Linux but how did the users cope with the OS switch from Windows to Ubuntu?

And yes best practice is to still have antivirus installed

Very easily. A word processor is a word processor, a spreadsheet is still a spreadsheet and an email client is still an email client :D Only problem was that compiz-fusion did kill a bit of productivity as everyone found out about it. For new users, its easier for them to learn linux than windows.

Yup, Not that the virus will infect Ubuntu but you gotta watch those file shares from MS machines infecting them.

The big thing keeping us back is compatibility between MS Office and LibreOffice. We are trying to push people to use more open standards :(

On our side we use Zimbra. Integrates very well into Thunderbird/Lightning and Outlook. They also have a standalone client for Linux, Windows and OsX.

We moved our mail to Google Apps. So we use the Gmail interface. Google Apps works wonderfully now that all of us have droids :D Some people use Thunderbird for an offline client, but most in the office either use their browser or Evolution. Or in many other cases, the Google applications on android for our tabs and phones.

Google calendar > Outlook calendar.

Google Calendar sms`s me for free to remind me about my meetings :D

exactly.

it's the same question as asking someone to move from Office 97 to the latest version. Yet the same question is not asked.

bright/clever people are finding issues with the change. yet give them a year it will be like they never used Office 97. Same with Linux. People will complain about right click not quite doing the same. They'll also get used to it.
