I have bought a new vehicle yesterday and my insurance require a tracking device. I applied for an Altech Netstar Sleuth system to be installed in my car but Altech informed me that they probably do not have reception in my area and that it would be better to install the more expensive Cyber-Sleuth Supreme which works on GSM and GPS.

I find it strange that they do not have reception in my area as I live only 20KM east of Pretoria. Which mean that if your car do get stolen in Pretoria and the thieves drives 20KM east Netstar can not track your vehicle.

Does anybody knows if this is true or is Altech just trying to get more money from me?

prob trying to get more money

i had a tracetec in my old car, didnt care if they were good or not - i took the cheapest, dont really want them to find the car if it does get stolen
just check if your insurance will accept it tho

I find it extremely concerning that they are telling you they have a blank spot they cannot provide cover. Their basic sleuth product has been selling for years now and I am sure it's their most sold product, which means that there might be thousands of cars and trucks without comprehensive coverage.

The Cyber-Sleuth is a much newer product and I get the impression that they are trying to sell it to you.

The technology they are referring to is commonly used by most stolen vehicle recovery systems.

If you have any doubt, why not look for another provider you feel you can trust? There are many others I know of who have excellent products and provide good service.

The problem with Tracetec is that not all insurers will accept them.

Or just try C-track's Insure product. Works good for me, cheap cheap too.

What is the price on that C-Track Insure? I can't find pricing on the website and I'm not in the mood to deal with pushy salesmen.

Altech NetStar

You are correct, Altech uses radio beacons - and therfore only has coverage at major intersections.
GPS and GSM systems are way better because they can pin-point your vehicle, but you still need GSM coverage.
Sometimes these systems can work out more expensive, but it's the pay for what you get scenario.
However, many of the GSM + GPS systems have been developed by quick - fly by night developers, hopeing for a quick buck.
As allways try before you buy if you can!
