Dont know if anyone has thought of this, but heres an aspect thats not recieving that much limelight.
If you look at the gaming industries sales in the last year which overtook the movie industries sales it shows u that the market is expanding and should recieve attention to capitalise from it.
Now in the states and in the most of the other broadband enabled countries a new type of game play hass started to emerge and from the interest out there its not gonna get smaller.
MMORPG if you think bout it the amount of games that are coming out and the actual amount of users playing the titles( Everquest has bout +150K users i think)thats a serious amount of dough. each of these players pay bout 10 quid a month which translates into 18 000 000 rands worth of income that we could make but cant cause of the poor infrastructure here.
anyone want to lobby this to trevor manuel.? he seems 2 like making money

New service by Telkom broadband speeds up to 5kbps for only R1k a month. heheh

I think what he is eluding to is the fact that Telkom is hindering the ability of entrepeneural organisations to make money using ADSL for local gaming services due to :
A. the cap and
B. the ports issue

Point is, if only the powers that be realised that money is to be made when opening the technology up to new commercial endevours, and not tightening them instead due to any possible 'abuse'.

Hello There,

In response to Fusion01's comment, as well as the the original comment - after experiencing other cultures and countries' governments, I think that the South African Government is really restraining the South African country's growth potential, by allowing companies, i.e. Telkom, to have monopolies and as such, reducing entrepreneural capability, by enforcing such ridiculously bad service and products, unto the consumers of the country - taken into account that the actual cost of implementing ADSL in South Africa, is much lower than Telkom wants everyone to believe, as it only means that upgraded telecommunications servers and routers have to be installed, to make use of the existing copper-infrastructure, which makes up the existing telecommunications infrastructure in the country. The cost of the servers and routers do not justify the profit that Telkom is making by charging the consumers and business such huge prices, even though their services are as bad. I am assuming that they (T) are supplying reduced services, as they are probably (most likely) trying to get as many users on as little hardware infrastructure as possible.

Thanks goodness for companies like Sentech, and hopefully others, who 'thinks outside of the box', and who dare to challenge companies, i.e. Telkom.

Agreed Jacques, but I notice you mention Sentech an awful amount. I have also read negative reviews by individuals whom have used services previously and have had no responses made to their queries, they've been kept 'in the dark' for months. Besides this, a simple check on their website indicates pricing (as of 4th Jan '04):

quote:
MyWireless 128: 128Kbps shared: R 649,00/month* 24 Month contract // Including Internet access and the wireless modem (USB or PCMCIA)

MyWireless 256: 256Kbps shared: R 849,00/month* 24 Month contract // Including Internet access and the wireless modem (USB or PCMCIA)

MyWireless 512: 512Kbps shared: R 1449,00/month* 24 Month contract // Including Internet access and the wireless modem (USB or PCMCIA)

Note the 512kbps service (equivalent to ADSL - well internationally anyway (!) - is actually R 1449,00 per month, not ~ R 800.00 - it is, in fact, a lot more, and prohibitively priced for most potential home users.

Also, a 24 month contract is extreme... Anyone eager to jump into this is, imho, not cautious enough. Once again, there is less incentive for them to upgrade or provide a brilliant service, as you're roped in for a long period. Overseas a 12 month contract for ADSL can be standard. This is the most I'd personally accept. I'm not insinuating that Sentech would do this, but I'm sure Sentech understand my point, and might revise - wisely - their contract period to 12 months / 1yr instead.

Everquest actually has 450,000 players. Everquest also have seven expansion packs. SEVEN.

I've played Everquest for some 4 odd years. Great game. Don't count the money I've wasted though... 48 months @ $11 a month = over $500, plus the game ($50), plus the seven expansion packs ($25 each) = $750...

fusion01 :

A 24 month contract is not extreme. Just about every cell phone contract out there is 24 months. Also Sentech have stated that their partners will provide packages where you can purchase the modem up front. I personally would not want to pay R4000 and 2 months later decide the service is crap and then have to try sell the modem.

While Sentech's 512k offering is fairly pricey it is targeted towards heavy users. There is no cap on the service and if you do the maths that works out to a theoretical 160GB a month of traffic. On the 512 package (as noted in another thread) you can also request a static IP which is huge benefit to SOHO users who would like to run a small web/mail server. A final factor is that the price includes paying off the modem, after the 24 month contract the price would drop to just over R1250.

fusion01, There are some good posts about sentech. One of the guys boasting that he gets about 2mbs to 3 mbs on downloads. So don't be so negative in 2 weeks time the service will be out(i hope) and we can all judge when we see it actually working.

..- dot dot dash ;)

Just a reminder, while the beta testers may be getting 2-3mb/s Sentech have stated that bandwidth will be capped to the package you choose i.e. on MyWireless 128 you will get max 128kb/s.

Armitage - actually MMORPGs have been around for ages. I play Ultima Online and it has been around since 1997 ;) And yes, those games make a serious amount of money for the companies driving them successfully. However, the opinion abroad seems to be that it is not 'lucrative enough' to host servers in South Africa. Just imagine if they could and we could connect to LOCAL servers and not have to worry about caps!

Ah, but I can dream...

In a way, if we had better(performance and price) internet connections, The gaming industry in SA would do much better. Online gaming would be taken to a whole new level in SA.
