Ok, I'm full of ideas today ... or maybe it's just gas ...

I was thinking ... If I keep my existing satellite connection and get one 3Gb I could use my satellite as a backup ...

Tech Stuff:
1st 3Gb - Normal ADSL usage
After Cap - almost unusable ADSL, this is when the Sat kicks in.
The satellite normally works using a normal dial up modem to send requests and the satellite to download ... eg: when downloading a HTML page there are requests sent from my PC and the then the whole page comes to me via the satellite. The requests are very small
On a weekend Fri nite to mon morning when I have done a LOT of d/l via the satellite ... my stats say 400-500 megs d/l but only about 1-2mb u/l .. (provided I don't upload or send any email, etc )
So even a capped ADSL connection should be able to handle it. ANd seeing as the ADSL connection is ALREADY up .. I will not need a separate dial up to use my satellite.

Financial Stuff (Ignoring install costs):
ADSL Line (384k): R450
3GB ISP : R250
Satellite : R350
Call Charges : R0
Total : R1050

and for that u get a 48k/s for 1st 3 gigs and then avg 20-25k/s for the remaining with NO Cap and NO call charges ....

Ok As I said it might just be gas but this looks feasible to me ... can anybody find holes in my logic ...

Txs

Something I just thought of is that I can decide whether I use the DSL or the Sat (inside my 3GB limit) if speed is not an issue .. eg: dl a 300Meg file from the states overnight ...

BlobNow, I think you have way too much time on your hands. [:p]

This was all discussed, indepth last year sometime. Not sure of the link, but try to do a search.

It's very simple to set up. I've found surfing with satellite to be terribly slow, so my main PC is setup to use ADSL and my second PC is setup using satellite on ADSL line for doing any large downloads. And yes, it works even once you're capped because it's your ISP account which is capped, not your ADSL line. So if you can afford ADSL and satellite, then I say go for it.

What sort of latency do you get internationally with satellite? Could someone post some pings?

400ms to Microsoft ... but in general satellite is not meant for gaming/chatting .. it's basically two networks in one ... you send a request via a modem then it goes to the server and then comes back over a different network ... but it's nice to d/l stuff ... and the bandwith spikes are nice .. I remember downloading Oracle CD's from the US on a friday night (it was a friday after a thursday public holiday so noone was in town and I was getting between 110k/s and 170k/s ... :) those 1.8Gb went quick quik :)

Interesting, a friend and myself are intending on sharing a connection but he plays star wars galaxies and I'm a cs nut. Hence being capped is a huge issue for him, his ping currently varies between 300 - 2000 so 400 ms isn't that bad. If I sent you an IP would you mind checking what the response is for me (I assume you currently have satellite)? Also who do you use as an ISP?

Spamtheman: Sure .. np .. Worldonline (ie: tiscali soon to be Mweb) ... using InfoSat's network ..
