I have an Mweb account at work. I have recieved emails regarding my usage in the last 12 hours (700mb). There is no one at my office. the building is locked up, no one is around to connect wirelessly. i do not have auto updates turned on in windows.
i left skype running when i left work. I have NEVER opened and .exe files unless I am sure what it is. Antivirus (AVG) scan shows no problem.
how can i tell what it is?

With all the porn piling up on the internet, it's not gonna download itself :D

Hmm, it is a bit tricky to work it out if you say it is at an office, someone else could have queued a download while they were not there.

But if you are sure no one would be "legitimately" downloading, then it could be that someone has gotten hold of your login credentials, this is not hacking, far from it lol.

Anyone could just log into your router if they have access to it, on an unprotected wlan perhaps. (if it has the default credentials set) they just get your details from there, or some one who somehow found out what your logon details are could be using it at home right now...

There is a thread were bandwidth theft is explained look at that, if you believe some one is "stealing" your bandwidth...

But in my experience, more often than not it is some bloke at the office trying to download something or as you mentioned auto update, Skype would not eat 700mb in 12hours..

Skype might use a fair whack if it was acting as a supernode.

Why not go online now and change your mweb password anyway?

i am the only one in my office - i work alone. My password on my router is not the standrad one. i have also set up my account to allow only 1 concurrent connection.
my wlan pawwsord is also not standrad.

how do i check what was d/l or uploaded in the last 12 hours. history folder in IE shows nothing extraordinary...
thanks for the help

i learnt from bad experiences do not use AVG, yes its free for 75 days... but it doesn't work... not fot me that is

i suggest u change ur anti-virus... mayb avast(free edition) or if u willing to pay go for kaspersky... both do a fair amount of good work and keep ur pc clean from virusses

alothough this will not fix your "Stealing" problem, but will protect ur computer in the future

Well that depends how they got it.

Hehe, I guess but I am tired of this stereo typical behaviour of, the moment something bad happens, "IT was the Hackers!". If you walk up to a computer log into the admin page, which the password is saved or using the default username and password and view source on the adsl password page you can hardly be considered a Hacker!! you are someone who knows how to get a password, like taking candy from a baby... Although I might be hearing people cry That is exactly what hackers do... Naive

I am not aiming this at silkman not at all seeing as he did what everyone should do when they get ADSL and a new router and so on Change your default login credentials!, Because doing a quick search on http://www.routerpasswords.com/ and then "stealing" a password is not hard at all. Get strong protection especially if you are using WiFi, I see countless unprotected WiFi networks all over Gauteng! I would just love to "Steal" their cap just because they are not protected!!!, I wont of course ;)

I even want to go as far as saying if you found some dude, by scanning the saix and IS Ip range and do some scriptkiddie exploit on him you are really only well a scriptkiddie. This is still very borderline for me...Lots of debates but outside the scope of the initial post. Hacker is a term given not taken... think about it... :)

Anyway before someone says I am a hacker, I just get so sick of people calling me for support and hearing, "oh dear I have been hacked!!" So remember this, most of the times people take things because it is easy, like your house having security gates alarm systems and so on, so to should your computer be protected, get a decent firewall, get decent anti-virus, not just some Norton package but something that actually works and works well, I believe in a layered approach when it comes to security, in other words, get Kaspersky anti virus , get Zone alarm Pro firewall, or Sygate Personal (its free if you can find it think comodo took then over so comodo is also good) or something don;t get XXXX all in one, jack of all trades internet-security-complete-protection-thing-a-ma-bobby.... Obviously you should also update your antivirus virus database!!! It is of no use you have Norton 97 which you got with your aunties old computer she bought at incredible corruption, and you never update the thing!

Or if you really want to be secure get Linux my friend, or just a decent Linux gateway, monowall or IPCOP or etc..., protecting all the computers on your network!!

Breath, breath... end of rant..

Have a good day hope you get to the bottom of your bandwidth problem...

thanks for the input guys...btw wtf is skype in "supernode" what does a supernode do?

can it work on local bandwidth only cos when my 1gig was used up there was still 400mb trasnferred locally?
