I have some pretty decent equipment - Nikon D300, 70-200 2.8, 17-55 2.8, 105 2.8 Macro, SB800.

The problem is that I'm finding myself spending less and less time taking photo's, because it has become a schlep dragging a backpack full of stuff arorund with me.

I'm thinking of dumping the lot and getting something like an Ixus 970, that takes good pictures, and is MUCH more convenient to carry.

I'm a hobbyist, was pretty danmed serious about photography for a number of years, and have been around the block (D100, D2H, D2X, D200), so don't shoot me down as an idiot. This is a serious qustion.

no you're not crazy
they are all cameras and they all take photos
get the size that you need

what about d40 & 18-55

Personally I prefer standard SLR 135mm cameras. digital just takes away the fun of taking photo's.

the d90 is the most fun I have ever had with any of my cameras (I have an EOS3 too)
I don't get your point at all
yes, Fuji Velia is great, but it does not have the functionality of a digital cam

This won't change anything - size-wise (which my gripe is about) there will be very little change. It will be lighter to carry around, yes, but still won't fit in a person's pocket.

The IQ from a P&S can never compete with that from an SLR. The sensors on P&Ses are just too small.

So my question would be, what are you wanting to take pics of that the SLR is too big and the IQ isn't an issue?

It is 100% an issue of convenience. I am well aware that there is no P&S that can touch the IQ of a D300. I think I'm going to get a compact to use whenver/whereever, and keep the decent equipment for when time/interest permits a disciplined approach once more.

That's exactly what I have done.
I bought a mid range "mik 'n druk" which I carry around in my car's boot. Should the need arise I always have a decent 10.1mp carera handy which gives satisfactory results;)

are you on flickr or anything like that?
have you joined our mybb group?

canon sd880 is capable of some amazing shots, I hear

Thanks ldmelsa, online reviews look good - I'll definitely put this on my shortlist.

Doesn't matter how much better the IQ is or that it has a much bigger sensor if its sitting in a bag at home. :o

I'd have a look at the G9/G10 or Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3

I'm at the stage, that if high ISO is rubbish and the flash is too weak, I'd rather not waste the effort of taking the pic and then trying to make it usable afterwards :(

Got the Ixus 870 (SD880) - and I'm satisfied. Small, compact, and does the job. Thank you, Idmelsa, for alerting me to this camera's existence.

oh lol :D
don't thank me, thank Ken Rockwell

how much you pay?

Canon PowerShot A590 IS

Is that a good camera for a beginner? I am thinking of taking on photography as a hobby, but only want to buy a second hand camera at first, to see if Im any good, and to start of with. I will then advance to better cameras as I go along.

Thank you for your advice!

Now I usually take anything that Ken Rockwell has to say with a (sack) grain of salt, as he is know to have "inflated the boat" a bit in the past. in this instance though, I am in total agreement with his opinion of the 870 - it realy is a superb little camera FOR MY NEEDS.

Local prices ranged quite a bit - from just under RK4 to just under RK5. I could import privately for around R3,500, but any savings go out the window if there is any kind of warranty service required. I decided to go with a store that I know very well, and have been doing business with for a number of years: Kameraz in Rosebank. Their asking price (;)) was R4200. In their opinion too, there is nothing in the same class that compares.

Also briefly considered the 980 IS, but it's lens only starts at 37 mm - not wide enough for me, and about a grand more expensive.
