Am I missing something?

Okay, let me first start out by saying I am spending about 3,000 dollars on a new PC built for gaming, and on my games list is World of Warcraft. But unfourtunately, I am stuck with the most evil thing that has ever existed....dial-up.

After literally spending weeks trying to find alternative options, basically I got the same "sorry, we don't really give a damn about you, even though you don't live way out in the country, you still are out of our puny little 12,000 feet area. Go milk a cow"

So that's right; DSL....nope; Cable....nope; T1....nope; Wireless....nope.
Ahh, it's neverending.

So I recently found out about this whole ISDN thing, and it's seeming to be my last hope for good online gaming.

Okay, I have a somewhat knowlegeable degree on this after all I've been reading, but my question is:

For strictly online gaming, ping times, and latency, what is the difference if I were to go with a 64kbps and a 128kbps? I've been hearing that for gaming, they both provide the same pings, so why would I pay 100 dollars a month for 128, when I could get the same performance for the 64 for half the price?
I understand downloading patches and such would be different, but hell, one day a month for a patch at a few hours opposed to one hour, I can handle.

Someone please enlighten me. I sincerely hope my assumptions are true, because paying 100 dollars a month for 128 is impossible. If 64kbps provides the same latency, then I'll be sooo happy I'll wet myself.

I appreciate your 'alls time.

your correct, 64k or 128k, only difference is twice the speed. 64k = 7-7.5k/s and 128k = 14-15k/s , latency will be the same if not bit better on 64k (1 or 2 ms ;-) )

Playing wow on 128k would help with more consistent latency tho, since in heavy raids your required bandwidth could topple 15k/s easily where 64k wont be good enough and well you guess it, you may experience some packetloss and higher ping. Just something to keep in mind.

Hearing that brings much joy! Thanks for youe help...

Also, could you predict the highest pings I could expect with a 64kbps? Compared to dial-up, Im sure this would be the better choice.

Gamer_222,

Your pings will be dependant on how far you are from the WoW servers and what the links are like. You will only be able to find out what they are when you have your connection, the ISP you plan to use may be able to give you a ball park figure what to expect.

generally in europe on isdn or better, if your from europe, you can except 100-200ms. Same goes if your in usa and connecting to usa, 100-200ms. Add 100-200ms if connecting usa to europe or europe to usa.

rburley - when I had isdn, and the guys I know with isdn, do constantly get those speeds.

@strobemeister - i am on ISDN128 too... but WoW hasnt been that laggy other than the usual 450-700 ms... maybe you are having ISP issues? but is it only WoW that is laggy lately?

WoW is fine on 64k, especially in europe where latency is better. Forget newer FPS games like Battlefield 2 though, it requires 128k and up.

I have also been experiencing lag in WoW of late, but so have other players that I am grouped with so I think it's more a blizzard issue.
