Amazed at how fools rush in...

What questions would/should I need to ask prospecting fibre providers? We have a few site surveys coming up.

Oh so many... depends what you're paying for.

Line/internet issues:
1. Guaranteed max contention ratios on service provided?
2. Fair usage policy for uncapped accounts - dont buy the 'its only for abuse' - if its priced at wholesale 100Gb + profit margin, then eventually using over 100Gb will be 'abuse'. Need to know what you sign up for. Define 'abuse'!! There is no free lunch. Some players do the volume chase at a loss, then re-price... seems to work to win people over, but not sustainable.
3. If you are paying huge amounts for installation, who owns the line from the box into your house? (i.e. who is responsible for maintenance of the line?)
4. SLA in terms of up time of fibre? Max down time/guaranteed repair time.
5. Size/capability of support/accounts divisions - some of the new service providers look like their run out of garages. Good luck getting your accounts queries resolved... or if something breaks, how long until its fixed?!
6. Everyone is promising 'open access'... some day... WHEN? At what terms... open access could be in 2025, at a huge charge for outside providers.

Installation issues:
1. Quality control of reinstatement of pavements, sidewalks, etc. after trenching
2. Escalation process in event of not being satisfied with quality of installation/reinstatement
3. Cost assumptions - often the installation fee (or the amount assumed which does not have to be paid upfront due to 24 month contract) assumes a max distance from the box outside your property/complex to the house.

I'm sure there is lots more.

Got an email last week from one of the providers on the forum here... they make it sound like you are so lucky that you 'qualify' for their fibre service. No contracts, no guarantees... just debit order forms. Think I'll sit back an watch until these guys actually have more than 50 people connected up to their network. Fibre is already in our area, I can just connect at a later stage... when the promised 'open' status of the network becomes live.

That's why we chose Frogfoot/Link Africa. They have a very open model, their prices are cheap and their business philosophy isn't as cutthroat as a certain blue provider *cough*.

Frogfoot were just acquired by Vox. So they must be doing something right.
