So I wanted to download a mail box hosted by Afrihost but couldn't do that due to a bad gateway error. Since I was logged onto their website I decided to give their live chat a go and had a nice 52 minute long chat, here's how it went down.

Hi, I am trying to download my mail box but receiving a bad gateway error.
S has joined the chat.
S (11:04:07) : How are you Dwaynne ?
Welcome to Afrihost LiveChat :-)
Dwaynne (11:04:32) :
Hi
Dwaynne (11:05:03) : Please assist with the query above
Dwaynne (11:12:07) : for the domain ***.co.za
S (11:19:13) : What do you have as the outgoing smtp ?
Dwaynne (11:20:36) : probably mail.***.co.za but I am trying to download it from webmail.
S (11:26:05) : Looking into it.
Dwaynne (11:35:57) : Can't even access webmail now.
Dwaynne (11:36:01) : "Internal Server Error

500

User 'amakulyx' is over quota."
S (11:38:10) : I see, if you are over quota then you need to upgrade your hosting space or delete mails to free up some space but if you delete and it gives you an error than it means that you are not able to write to disk meaning your package has run out of disk space.
Dwaynne (11:40:59) : What have I exceeded though because my disk usage is 639.58 MB/1,000 MB
S (11:41:47) : What is the email address in question ?
Dwaynne (11:42:18) : ***@***.co.za
Dwaynne (11:47:53) : in fact non of the mail boxes can be accessed via webmail.
Dwaynne (11:52:59) : do you know what's the problem?
The party has left. Chat session has ended.

Thank you so much for your help Afrihost. :)

Honestly though if your agents don't want to help they must say so at the start don't leave me hanging. You're not some hot chick on Instagram who's DM's I'm tryna slide into.

Just move hosts. I'm actually contemplating helping everyone who is on Afrihost move their site/mail/dns etc to somewhere else for free. I will be doing a public service. Trying to think of how I can approach this and not spend all my after hours moving people

No surprises. I now actually make a point with web clients that i will not work with Afrihost hosting.

domains.co.za

Never in your life will you have a repeat of the above when you use a real host.

I also had to leave them after they decided for themselves what IP addresses may or may not log into the dedicated server I rented from them. When you try to find out what they are doing, you get the type of response depicted above.

I have moved most of my domains and hosting over to ample hosting, it's just this one domain that's a problem. When I registered it I did so directly through co.za using an email address that I no longer have access to so I assume that the name servers will be stuck on afrihost forever. Otherwise I would gladly move over.

I've been getting the same crap from them. I have an outstanding query for about 3 weeks now. Left them as ISP earlier this year after almost 10 years of service. I'm about to close my account soon.

Yeah, but it's easy to leave you hanging, because you don't even know his real name, just shows the type of responsibility they're willing to put with and the type of respect they have for customers.

I know the guys name but wouldn't wanna expose him and n such a way. I do however hope my issue gets resolved and they don't do this again. I've been a customer since 2009 and they've been good, so I wouldn't wanna stop doing business with them because of a silly hosting package.

I'm going to say that this will be the first of many issues you will have in resolving a hosting issue with them. By all means, keep them as your ISP, but not as your host.

ISP <> Host
Host = Host
ISP no host

There are 2 problems here:

a) as has been stated an ISP <> Host
b) Support is seen as a low level afterthought service and so you have people that can barely keep the rhythm of their breathing steady without concentration in a position to "help" you technically. When you pay people R3000 a month this is the level of customer service they can provide.

I still hold the view that employing 5 very capable, highly skilled people to manage support would be better than 500 unskilled. I guess the challenge is finding someone that is smart enough to do the job effectively while having them work in such a **** atmosphere everyday.

My point exactly... The "smart enough person" would probably stay if he likes upskilling other people and not himself.
