Amazon.com stops sending to SA via post office

Saw it on another SA site, then went to check it out myself

Amazon.com will now ONLY send to SA via DHL.
The 2 cheaper post office options are no longer avialable to SA

We are the only african country that cannot get either of the 2 cheaper options.
Even Zimbabwe can get them!!


Not that ive used those options recently, but shows what they think of SA.
 
No worries for me, I've always used the British based Amazon.

I really am beginning to envy Zim more and more
 
Good move. I've always been a bit unsure about expensive stuff + Post office...it just doesn't strike me as a good combination.
 
I've always found items ordered directly from amazon.com to get lost here in SA. Hence the need to setup www.wantitall.co.za in the first place. Quite interesting times for the local public wishing to buy items from abroad ;(
 
Our post office is a joke, i had an amazon order worth well over R1000 go missing thanks to our post office and amazon sent me a replacement free of charge. Guess they don't really like losing money.

Yup, much better to get amazon prime for free shipping to a myus account for cheaper shipping to SA
 
I've only ever ordered once from Amazon and it did arrive safely:).

The post office service here does leave much to be desired. Ask to post to some lesser know country and you'll get "the look" - "the look" that says "where the fsk is that" or "is that on another planet". For crying out loud have you even seen a local post office with a world map?:rolleyes:

A shipment weighing 1.00 Kgs, being sent to SOUTH AFRICA, would cost approximately $32.50

Then include the $10 invoice fee per shipment and you are paying $42.50, prior to packing fees ($3.00 per item).

Then add in around $14 per month, if you ship every month.

So if you ship 1kg per month (which is a lot of DVD's) you sitting at $60 for one KG. Not exactly cheap.

I know many people who have used the service for a year, and once doing the calculation... cancel.
 
Honestly it doesn't surprise me that Amazon have decide against using our "wonderful" Post Office. There is nothing safe and secure about our Post Office. I have had three parcels disappear, they supposedly got lost. [Lost into someone's bag :(] This was after I ensured they had a tracking number and the whole bang shoot.

Is that not a statement as to the lack of professionalism and safety of one's goods in SA

Have you seen amazons rates ?

From 2 actuall 7 Blu-ray shipments:
4.0 LBS package
Assume R8-$1

Myus:
DHL shipment fee : $45.37
DHL customs clearance fee: R65
Invoice fee: $8
Annual membership/12 = $11 per month
Amazon Prime monthly membership: $6,5
TOTAL: $70.87 +R65 = R631.96 + customs duty


Amazon:
UPS shipping fee : $109
UPS customs clearance fee : R100
Total = R972 + customs duty

R340 cheaper, if you only do 1 amazon shipment a month
If like most working here you get 3 to 6 per month, and not just amazon, and you get magazines and mail ect ect, you save more.

If you want cheaper and you have a US branch, you can get a corporate DHL account and have your branch forward the goods for even cheaper


Im sure one can save using your system aswell.
Im just saying amazon aint the cheapest
 
This is weird. I have never had problems receiving any shipments from Amazon, be it the US, UK or Germany branch... Who knows what's going on behind the scenes there.
