Amazon Glacier tech

The comments seem to have the story -> Ex engineer saying that they have racks filled with HDs that can't all be powered up at the same time because of power and cooling requirements.

That coupled with erasure coding means slow retrieval speed.

The disk density you need however to make their prices realistic is pretty high so I'm Jack's complete lack of surprise that they would need to power down racks for heat and power consumption.

IIRC glacier is stored in 3 AZs so you need to calculate your space requirements x3 to calculate the real price it would cost to have that same level of durability.

Factor in the cost of transferring data between 3 physically separate data centres (all far apart) and glacier is pretty economical.
