Amazon Kindle

CPA CPA CPA ;)

I had no problems registering the Kindle with a South African address, I guess Amazon don't really care in the end.
It's a question of whether Takealot's warranty handling will be as painless as Amazon's.

Ok cool thanks. So she could order the international version but ship it to her US address. Hopefully they dont send her the US version just because it's going to a US address.
She can order either the advert or non-advert version. Considering you'll very likely have no warranty from Amazon you might as well save the maximum amount of money and get the advert version.

+1.

The advert version will in SA be considered a grey import as it's not for sale in SA by Amazon but if you have an issue, post it to your s-i-l :p

Even the other one they may only be willing to ship a replacement within the US if that is where it was bought.

From Amazon:

Warranty Service
Whether you bought your Kindle through Amazon or in a retail store, your Kindle is covered by a One-Year Limited Warranty. If you need service under the warranty or would prefer some personal assistance, please contact us so we can help determine how best to help you. We'll gladly provide service or a replacement according to the warranty guidelines.

The only "issue" with the Special Offer Kindle is that you cannot take up the offers, not the Kindle, in your country if you live outside of the States. An example is two days ago they had a sale on 50 books for $1 each - when I clicked on the offer they said we do not qualify. But not all offers are exclusive and I was able to buy a $1 advertised screensaver offer they had that was open to all Kindle owners.

Personally with CPA I've got 6mths no nonsense guaranty from Takealot and if it does not break in 6mths, then I'm happy to carry the risk.

Are the adverts only present on the kindle when you're not reading and are connnected either by wifi or 3g? I would think it will be annoying to have the ads on the screen while reading?

Do they get annoying or are they reasonably out of the way?

When you turn your Kindle off, a screensaver comes on. That's where the adverts are displayed. So it's not like the adverts on the Android phones

Oh ok, that's not so bad then I guess other than having US focused ads.

Are those adverts? :-/ I thought they were book covers

That's the question, do those guidelines provide for supplying a replacement to a different country to the one from which it was originally bought.

I'm also not questioning whether Takealot would honour the warranty.

Just the wallpaper/screensaver when you turn it off and a banner at the top/bottom of the home screen. The adverts are also static, saved onto the Kindle. They get updated periodically, but you don't need to be online for them to display.

They're just arbitrary images on mine. No relation to the books.

Just one point someone needs to confirm: if you buy the third-generation Kindle (aka the Kindle Keyboard) it has a built-in SIM which enables free web browsing internationally (works a treat on Vodacom in SA) with some restrictions, notably no actual downloads or streaming. HOWEVER the US version SIM is by AT&T, while the international version has a Vodafone SIM enabling roaming on any Voda partner network.

I have heard that using the US version therefore restricts a lot of international roaming, where the Vodafone version is much more global. Is this correct -- and if so, it may be a serious consideration if trying to save a few bucks by sourcing through a friend buying the US version more cheaply there.
