Amazon opening data centres in South Africa

I had a massive brain fart thinking we are in 2019 for some reason and this is all going down "just a few months away next year".

2020 is moer and long gone away and I don't see why it should take them THAT long. Maybe it's a case of underpromise and over deliver?

I can only imagine the construction contracts are a. Bit longer than expected plus an. Extended period of testing and. Certification.

Well the reason I'm privy to all of it is because of the construction contracts.

But yeah I didn't think further than that to actual live testing and staffing ramp up etc once it all goes live post construction.

Yeah.. I'm just thinking about what it takes us to sign off an a new location even when we're just colocating in an existing DC.. And of course our footprint is significantly smaller than an aws DC.

Not that long. 14 months. Lead times for hardware delivery could be a significant chunk of that.

Yes that is all done already.

Which is why the announcement is happening only now.

So it’s a case of the ball actually starting to roll now and not just planning for it any more.

When I say sign off I mean approve to be used for production workloads once everything is installed and setup.
