It would be better to see what Chris Griffiths salary increased by as he is the CEO of Amplats, Anglo American is the global holding company.

Funny how they list only the increase in his base salary and not total remuneration. The recent annual report just details how the package is structured but no comparison with that of the past year. One would think a prospective investor would want to see that in there and not have to dig through previous years' reports

EDIT: Okay, I see he was appointed September 2012, so this would have been his first full year

My gut reaction is to hope, despite all the negative knock on effects, that these strikers lose their jobs and the back of the unions is broken.

All I really want is for the unions to be weakened by this, but in reality going by past experiences and the historic wisdom of the workers, will the unions and in particular the union bosses really be any worse off if that happened? It seems like no matter what happens they come out clean and smelling like roses. Even if Mathunjwa get's pushed out the union, he's probably got a couple million stacked away and will walk into some cushie tender deals while the workers suffer out in the cold.
 
My prediction. Mines are going to get a taxpayer funded bailout.

He only took a 3% increase, workers should be glad they are being offered a much greater percentage increase.

Precisely.. except of course they will be told the monetary value of his increase, not the percentage.....

Which isn't an entirely unreasonable way to look at things, imo. He's still making R17 million, in salary alone. When it comes right down to it that is just a buttload more than the plebs on the bottom are making. The percentages are meaningless in the context of the down and out workers.

Well you could take that 17mil and divide it between the thousands of workers, but it would work out to a few Rand per worker.
 
These fat pigs at the top earning ridiculous amounts of money can take one of their bonusses of 10mill and divide into the pool of workers at the bottom. Would it solve anything, no. Would it give each worker a substantial cheque for the month, no.

Would it go a long way towards good faith and all the other fluffy stuff. YES IT WOULD.

And will this ever happen, NO.

Just found an article from 1987 that says that after a 3 week strike SA miners were earning $250 a month. At the time the exchange rate was 2.5 rands to the dollar. So that means miners at the time were earning a little over R600 a month. Not even close to R4500.

EDIT: wait apparently whitey miners earned 3 times that amount, so the white miners were earning about R1800 a month or so. Still not R4500.
