Hi guys,

At what temperature should an AMD 6850 run?

Under normal conditions mine is at 38-40c. When I play games it reaches 50-55c.

All the games I play run smoothly with the correct settings. Once my card starts to heat up my screen gets 'twitchy' and blurry. This happens only during gaming.

If I change my fan settings to manual and to 80% or higher under AMD Catalyst control center things get better.

Any advice on the 'twitchy' matter? If I would underclock it would the temp decrease?

55°C really shouldnt be causing any issues... um... By "things get better" I assume the twitchiness is still there? If so it sounds like you have a dud card, and should return it for a replacement

Can you get screenshots of 'twitchy and blurry' ?

Blurry is not a common symptom of overheating.

Those temps are good dude but if you want to get them lower perhaps get a case with a side if you don't have one but it seems a waste considering how low those temps are. What you can do is take a 3 fan cooler and place it where your side panel is and see if it helps, obviously you must remove the side panel :p. I used that for my rig because my rig would shut down if i didn't with the 6990 and 6970.

I mean if I let the software manage the fan speed it doesn't cool the card down enough. If I set it manually to 80% or higher it cools it better and removes the twitchyness.

Screenshots come out fine.

That's a good idea Killadoob, will look into it!

Are you saying it did shut down? Or are you assuming it would?

It shut down, we had this argument the other day and you never wanted to believe how much heat a 6990 and 6970 can produce, so let's call it a draw :D. The 6990 is fine on it's own but add 6970 and you got problems.

Well shut down is a bit harsh i guess, freeze would be a better way to put it but obviously a reset was needed

"I used that for my rig because my rig would shut down if i didn't with the 6990 and 6970."

Saying my rig would shut down was a bit vague though i must admit

I get those if not higher temps on my 6870, so not sure why you would be getting a problem. Must be a faulty card?

Ah sorry guys, didn't notice the updates!

@pada I've got a brand new entry level Cooler Master Case, with some 12cm fans.

It's fixed! I changed my screen refresh rate from 60hz to 75 hz.

Can't believe it was something as silly as that!

Thanks for the help though!

MY 6970 gets feeking hot. It idles at 50°C - 60°C with out me setting the fan speed and runs at 96°C under full load this cant be correct. Any advice?

That looks extremely high! Won't your card burn out at that temps?

Check the ventilation inside your case. Check card fan. Are you running at stock speeds or overclocked?

While it won't burn out I'd say that's slightly high for a 6870. Either high ambient room temp, poor case ventilation, or something related to gfx card/fan. They should normally idle around 40 - 50'C.

running stock speed and has not been over clocked. I think it is my fan sensor might be shot the auto sensing sucks runst 25% on idle, changed that last night with the thxxx program supplied to 35% dropped my temp to 45°C on idle. also have changed my fan control for the heavy gaming 50°C - 50% fan speed, 60°C - 80% fan speed and 75°C - 100% fan speed. will check whet temps i get on this under full load tonight.

Do you have a lcd or a crt?
What psu do you have btw?

I have a 27" samsung LCD and the PSU is a 720 watt gigabite oden +- 5 years old. Hav purchsed a Coolermastr GX750 watt PSU waiting for delivery

720 watt gigabite oden + peh?
you know lcds only emulate a refresh rate to work with a gpu in the same way a crt use to work. Which means it needs to stay in sync.
27 inch tells me its a hdtv 60hz but I know you can get 75Hz at lower resolutions... Question is are you connected via hdmi cause dvi dont have enough bandwidth for 75hz
Something tells me you are using windows generic driver for your lcd.

To avoid something like that happening install the driver for your screen. If you cant find one use Rivatuner to make one for you. Its very easy to do. Then install the driver so windows will know the limitations of your screen and connection

Why such a big psu btw? a 450W is more than enough for that card

I replaced my 6950's stock cooler. Idle temps at idle are now at around 35C & the card is overclocked with the 6970's firmware (2months now) Try the Zalman V3000A, but u need to trim one of the heatsinks to fit.

It runs at fan 100%, temp 69C under benching with heaven
