Hoping I can get some clarity on this issue from someone "in the know":

Spoke to a PC salesman yesterday about AMD processors (See why - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/386691-New-builder-1st-builder-(LLano)?highlight=) and he mentioned that he doesn't keep stock and will only order AMD processors as he has heard from other PC tech experts that the AMD processors don't do well in Durban's humidity! Apparently their lifespan is drastically reduced at the coast!?

I tried a google search but haven't found much on the subject. Anyone here have experience with this?

A friend of mine in Durban has an AMD and it's running fine. Together with his Corsair H50 it's sitting at 23C... and it's around 2 years old now I think.

It sounds like an excuse to me. He is a "salesman" after all :) There is no reason why it would affect AMD more than Intel. The processor package is hermetically sealed in any case.

What I mean is after the processor is installed it wont last as long as the intel processors.

There's no evidence to prove such.... there's other places as humid as Durban and who's ever heard about such issues occurring?

Even more bollocks. Intel and AMD use all the same materials, and largely the same package. Only real difference is AMD has the pins on the CPU (pads on the mobo), while Intel has the pins on the motherboard (pads on the CPU).
1) Seriously, ask the salesman to explain exactly why AMD chips suffer from humidity more.
2) Upload the conversation to youtube
3) ???
4) Profit!! (and lols)

Optional extra:
1.1) Ask him if AMD GPUs also suffer

Seriously now, I don't know who's lacking more in the common sense department... You really do need to go back and ask him why/how he has come to this conclusion.

Most salespeople either have no idea what they are talking about or lie outright for whatever reason. It scares me that so many people rely on their "knowledge" to make purchasing decisions:D

Lol, that's brilliant I have to go back and ask that.

blaaislaai
That salesman is obviously an Intel fanboy
I think 99.9% of them are, which is why these strange stories appear in the first place

Thanks for all the input guys. Glad that you could confirm what I was originally thinking.
(Goes back to dreaming about new Llano build.....)

Does the "salesman" get commission? Is it in his best interest to rather sell you a R2000 CPU than a R1000 CPU?

Also, ask him if the Intel i3 and i5 also suffer and if he recommends that you buy the most expensive i7 :wtf:

Salesmen!

Never listen to anything a salesman says. Do your own research and make your own decisions. If you listen to a salesman's recommendations, you are guaranteed to get screwed.

Salesmen, by definition, know more about selling than what they are selling. In other words, the word of a hobo on the street means as much to me as that of a salesman. More in fact, since the hobo is more likely to be honest.

It BS dude.... I stay in Richards Bay. I habe the AMD Phenom II x6 1100t CPU and overclocked it to 4Ghz and its a absolute pleasure CPU..... I wouldn't think that it would make any difference....

It is all the same i have had occasion to work on a PC that was about 300 metres from the sea it was an intel and the whole inside was corroded it was about 3 years whole case every thing was badly corroded binned the lot does not matter intel or AMD
