hello everybody

this is my first post here, so forgive me if i make any blatant mistakes.

i am needing to upgrade my system. i am thinking of the following components

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition
Mobo: Asus M4A88TD-M Evo USB3
RAM: Patriot G2 1600mHz 8Gb Kit (2 x 4Gb)
GPU: Asus DirectCuII 6870
PSU: Seasonic SS-500ES

Does this sound like a reasonable setup?

i will mainly be buying from www.computersonly.co.za or www.sybaritic.co.za

i will only be playing games on this system, as i have a laptop for movies, music and other work

Why AMD only?

If you want to save a bit of money, you can look at the X6 1055T. Its a few hundred R cheaper (got mine for R1275) and it has 2 extra cores. Wont overclock as high as that X4 BE though.

Dont bother with the DirectCU, just get the cheapest 6870 you can.

Good build. I like. Just check how much a 965 or 970 would be though. Unless you plan on overclocking.

Why go for a 965 or 970 if the 955 is also unlocked?

so, the 955 is a decent choice? i don't really want to have to upgrade the porcessor too soon, so i might spend some more on a 1090T instead.

The 955 is R1 342, while the 965 is R1 436.

the 1090T is only R1 875.

so, which one?

1090T or 955BE?

Well since you say "only R1 875" it means it's in budget so take the 1090T. You won't need to upgrade your cpu for a very very long time then.

well, i meant only in that its not much more expensive. i was expecting well into the R2 000 area for it, so R1 875 seems decent to me :)

Why only AMD though? You know Intel makes much better and faster CPUs right?

the DirectCU is not much more expensive than that one, and the noise and cooling are great :)

so, looks like this system is a go :)

i know intel makes faster, better, more efficient CPU's etc, but they are just too expensive for me. an AMD rig will cost about R7000 while a comparitive Intel rig will cost closer to R9000 due to increased motherboard and CPU cost

Yip.

It's why I love AMD.

Never mind the fact that a cpu monopoly would be the worst thing ever for consumers.

agreed.

just to throw a spanner into the works, would it not be a good idea to get a motherboard with the new 990 chipset? they are a helluva lot more expensive though

Nope. 8 series chipset is fine. That 1090T ourperforms Bulldozer in a lot of tasks anyway and I think Piledriver will use a new socket. So no need.

ok, whew :) thanks.

damn sybaritic, keep changing their prices... for some unknown reason, the 1090t is now a whole R13 more expensive than the 1100t...and the motherboard isn't mentioned on either of the sites...MEH

So take the 1100T :D

I'm also looking at a new rig one of these days - whats the cost so far for your set-up?
