Have a PC with an Asus M2NBP-VM CSM motherboard in and a AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU in it.

Want to upgrade as a mule to test Windows 7 64bit. Is the Athlon64 X2 7750 BE a good option?

Want to upgrade the memory to 4 or 6 gig as well.

The CPU will be cool and can take the punch. If you're going to up the memory, you must opt for the 64bit OS otherwise you won't see/use it all. With that being said, you may find that the bump from 4gb-6gb might not be worth it.

That cpu will run windows 7 just fine man, why not run windows 7 and see if you need the upgrade.

I was going to go i7 920 from my q9550 but since i have loaded windows 7 i found it to be so fast that i did not need the upgrade. Check it out before wasting money on a new cpu when you don't need it.

If this was for vista then yes a cpu upgrade for sure but windows 7 flies on older pc stuff.

Well that is a relief, although will be running some graphics programs on the machine as well (Photoshop CS4, Corel 9, Paintshop Pro etc).

If I can get away with not having to upgrade the CPU, can rather use the budget to opt for a better graphics card instead of the OB gfx.

Hoping to the W7 64 bit so will definitely be getting more memory (as I do believe that the 32bit OS's only show/use a max of 3gig). So not worth getting 6 over 4 Gig?

What is better, running 4 x 1 gig in DC or running 2 x 2 gig in DC?

The Athlon64 X2 7750 BE is a nice processor. I got one for my daughters PC as it was relatively cheap. I would only go with 4GB if I were you unless you are doing some serious DTP work or something along that line.

2x2GB

It should allow you to set timings to 1T

With RAM in all 4 slots you will HAVE to run at 2T

Will stick to the 2 x 2Gig then, thanks :)

Will install W7 64 bit and see how it runs. If necessary, will upgrade CPU to the 7750 as well.

My 3400+ Turion 64 (much slower than ur 3500+) runs windows 7 just fine...just run out of memory very quickly (1gig DDR333)

So its a good call, just up the ram and see from there...

Yep. Going to throw in some decent RAM, new HDD and GFX card and bowl along from there :)

The 7750BE is a nice cpu, I have mine for 3 months and no problem at all. I have an extra one for sale only 1 week old.
The 7750BE is a 9850 socket AM2+ (1066Mhz memory bus) with 2 cores disabled ,multiplier unlocked and fsb increased to 2.7Ghz. It also have Hypertransport 3. I run mine at 3.2Ghz with standard cooling without problems.

Price?

Cheap. :D

Seriously, it's R751 incl. VAT at pcint.co.za

And it has 3MB cache, which is interesting when the full quad core has only 4mb.

Good price.

That is why I was looking at it as a possible option to purchase.
