Fair enough but how far can you get it on air or liquid cooling?
 
Dunno probably 5Ghz? The amazing thing for me is that its on all 8 cores.

Depending on Piledriver's prices i reckon it might be a viable alternative to Intel once again. In a gaming rig the GPU probably plays the biggest part but that's not the case with all games.

Yeah, 5GHz is around the limit of what most reviewers are seeing. Anything lower, especially if the chip is hitting only below 4.6GHz, is mostly due to motherboard factors, TIM and the cooling used. I've heard some pretty amazing things from other testers I'm in contact with and it is a return to form for AMD providing better performance per dollar than most other chips from Intel. Sure, a Core i7-3770K beats it by quite a distance in some cases, but its regularly retailing for R1200 more than the R2200 we can expect the FX-8350 going for when it lands here.

Best chip out of the family for gamers? I'd go with the FX-6300.

Well for one it means they've done quite a lot to tie up the severe heat and wattage problems of Bulldozer. For another, the CPU benchmarks respond very positively to clocks. At 4-5ghz you'll be taking on a 2600k.

Only around thirty chips were received into the country, so stock is running out pretty quickly. Not a bad price for Prophecy there.

Overcoming Amdahl's law, really. Since AMD can't do anything for single-thread performance without a die shrink, getting the heat and wattage down and allowing higher clock speeds will help with throughput.

I've been waiting for them to arrive on the wholesale price lists, without much luck - seems the only way to get one is from the online importers (+/-R2500).

At stock speeds, the i5 3570 (vanilla) beats it in most of the benchmarks I care about (FPS in gaming). When you have spent the money on the extra cooling, etc, and the time, it starts to look less attractive, especially since a decent OC board is in excess of R1.5K when you can get a stock Intel board for around R1.2K with the same features.
 
I have to wait till Friday to order it. I hope I can get one, it's an in place upgrade to my 8120.

These chips do respond really well to oc'ing.

Same old, same old - I thought I could hang in there when my SATA controller started giving grief. A week with a dual core drove me nuts, so I opted for the 3570. Luckily I had spare machines about. Managed to replace board, processor, and ram for just under R4K. AMD would have cost me more, and as things are tight I decided to whack an i5 3570 and sell it for an upgrade when times are better. ;)

Glad you got yourself sorted! I'm so amped, can't wait for this CPU to arrive at my door.

Kinda sad how this proc retails for $195 and over here it's R2400-2600
