AMD or Intel

I have always been an intel fan and noticed something today

I can get a AMD Phenom II X4 965 Quad-core AM3 3.4Ghz Black Edition Boxed Processor for about R1100 @ compared to i5 2500 for about R1900

The i5 I noticed is a 3.3 why is it that intel is more expensive though ?

My mobo, ram and power supply I have an idea so not too worried on that field
 
GHz haven't mattered since 5 years ago.....RTFM please.
 
Performance wise what would be the increase in percentage moving from amd to a i5?

[IMHO]If someone couldn't find that information that needs a high end Game Box, they shouldn't even own one[/IMHO]
 
what you need to check is whether you will actually notice any significant difference in game performance?
 
IMO it all depends on what you're using your PC for - you haven't mentioned that?

I've always used AMD processors for my desktops and Intel for laptops - I make use of virtual machines, do video rendering, don't play many CPU-intensive games, so my desktop has a Phenom II x6 1100T processor - more than enough for what I need it for.

I also believe that you should get the best you can afford at the time you need it - these days, the tech gets updated every 5 minutes, and the latest incarnation of an i5, i7 or Phenom II will be outdated fairly quickly - buy a CPU (or PC) based on what you need it for, with a bit of spare capacity where needed - don't jump in for an i7 and only use it for e-mails and browsing... ;)

Passmark is fail. Really, you do not ever use synthetic benchmarks to gauge gaming performance. Its been proven over and over that most of them have a huge bias towards Intel

Having said that @OP - your best bet actually is the 2500k.
 
It does depend on the intended use. There is no point spending a lot of extra money for extra performance you are not going to use.
 
Always pick intel if you want the best performance. There are lots of reviews I have read about AMD vs. Intel and they say that the AMD chips made for gaming arn't as good as Intel Chips.

I heard that AMD goes well with an ATI Graphics card and an Intel Processor goes well with an Nvidia Chip.
 
I actually want this for a gaming pc

So specs wise

I would go for a 600 or 700 Power Supply (Corsair or Coolermaster)
Asus Board (Intel or AMD)
8 Gig DDR 3 2000 Vengeance ram

Oo yeah and a proper graphics chip but only next month though

As I can gather from everyone here intel is definately the way to go
 
No need for such fast RAM. You are paying for "performance" that you will never ever see.

Agreed 1600 is all you'd need, but 1333 is just fine.
I'd also just cut back to 4GB... At the moment there is no need to go 8GB, I'd rather put that into my GPU...
