AMD prices VS Intel prices

This is something I have recently come accross when doing price comparisons. The prices of AMD products here are so inflated as appose to the Intel prices. I was looking at how much it would cost to build a new gaming pc and gone the AMD vs Intel build route - matching the performances of the CPU and features of the motherboards as close as possible.

When comparing the dollar to rand prices of an AMD CPU + mobo combo, then a Intel combo, AMD is much more inflated. It seems value for money wise AMD comes out ontop when buying directly in dollars (I used amazon to build these rigs). When I looked up the prices here I found it was almost Intel who ended up ontop.

I was creating 2 pc builds with similar components AND features. AMD was cheaper, allowing me to spend more on a GPU. I then gone around some of the well known local shopping sites (Rebeltech / Wootware / Takealot ect) to see the same AMD builds costing almost as much. The savings were minimal TBH, not nearly as much as on amazon.

I really like AMD's value for money but at this rate Intel seems better. How come AMD is so much more expensive here?

Example:

Rebeltech

AMD's FX6300 - R1747

On Amazon

AMD FX6300 - 99$ @ R11.56 per $ = R1144

That is about a 52% Price Hike.

Now for a Intel Example:

On Rebeltech

i5-4460 - R2475

On Amazon

i5-4460 - 202$ @ R11.56 per $ = R2335

That is about a 7% price hike.

Why are AMD prices so inflated? It seems like madness. AMD use to beat Intel. Even locally. Now it seems Intel is the way to go.

Could be that local distributors are more keen to sell Intel chips as they're more popular, so bring in higher quantities and sell them off at lower prices?

AMD in the US has a better relationship with the distributors and big-box retailers, to the point where they can lower and dictate prices on a weekly basis to remain competitive in the PC landscape. In ZA, AMD shipments for processors and boards are much lower than Intel's, between 10-15% of the total sales for boards and CPUs for most retailers. Because they have to be competitive with each other, local shops and distis offer better deals on Intel hardware, while they leave AMD pricing to go up because few people buy into them because Intel hardware ends up being cheaper.

Its a vicious cycle and I'm thankful that it doesn't extend to AMD's GPUs. AMD ZA is somewhat responsible for this as well, since I haven't seen or heard from an AMD local rep in eons.

I could be wrong but I think they shut down their local office which was in jhb several years ago, memory is bad but I'm sure I read something way back. Everything is now handled via 3 distributors.

I remember and I used to know the lone rep left in the country who had to do everything by himself. I've no idea if he's still active.

All news articles, press releases, interviews etc. was always by the same guy and he was knowledgeable & passionate about amd processors. Real pity that he's gone.

Yeah noticed it, an AMD processor that's suppose to be $50 cheaper than it's Intel counterpart in terms of pricing overseas are the same price.

It gets worse the higher you go in price.
If you look at the secondhand market in South Africa and the lack of FX cpus, something must happened close to 2012.

OP, if you really want to complain about prices compared to the US and UK, check out the absurd differences for monitors. It is mind-bogglingly huge, some monitors are twice the price here compared to other countries.

That's thanks to the ANC putting on the extra 25% tax cause you could use the monitor as a tv tax.

And there's a 15% tax on monitors larger than 19.5". This and other taxes is the entire reason why one can buy two 16x90 19.5" monitors for the same price as one 22" 19x10 display. Its absolutely frustrating.

I wish SA was a consumer-driven market, but we just aren't.
