Amd Tri-core Vs Quad-core

poenie please tell me where you are buying those modules from ?

links ?

ive got a 5770 1 gig oc edition but want to upgrade some other things too .. is the 6850 really that much of an improvement ? i find that with the latest drivers my current card is doing fairly well still and its like 8 months old ? but then again ... the smell of new stuff is so addictive :D

I also have a 5770. Rather wait for the next gen cards. My card doesnt make games lag yet. If you really wanna upgrade then get the 6870.

Pada what are you talking about bud?

The 6850 is a hige upgrade from the 5770, i had a 5770 and it was pretty poor unless i put another with it. Honestly it is an over priced card for the performance in my opinion. The 6850 smashes the 5770 by 20-40 frames in some in games

6850 is a very good upgrade from a 5770. It is so cheap and pomps the 5770. An overclocked 5770 will not touch this card i reckon, how do you make up 30FPS with an overclock? Impossible.

9FPS better in metro 33 is a pomping haha.

killadoob, if you're going to be building a completely new rig, then by all means go for the HD 6850 since it is about 35% better than the HD 5770, which is a big jump!

Here are charts comparing the HD 6860 with other cards (incl HD 5770): http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/Radeon_HD_6850/28.html (~35% performance increase over HD 5770)

Metro 2033 is just one of those games where you'll get way more than just 50% performance increase with the HD 6850 over the HD 5770.

I'm not sure if it's worth it to upgrade from a HD 5770 OC (which would be about 10% better than the stock HD 5770) to an HD 6850 though. I would much rather do like Qwikslver said, and upgrade to an HD 6870!

Its not worth the extra R200 in my opinion, but im guessing that it would cater more for the future as well.

Glad you're getting a decent PSU. So many people budget POS PSUs. What they don't realize is the power u save from an 80+ PSU can pay for the difference in cost in 2-3 months!

Go for quad core. You'll save in the long run and you'll get better performance. Gfx card is also very important ! And LOTS of fast ram, as much as you can afford. I've had my current PC the longest ever, now going on THREE years and I can still play anything out of the box at max res (22" monitor 1680x1050) and all bells & whistles turned on and still get reasonable 40fps. Plus, since using Vista 64 (and) then Windows 7 64bit with quad core I have NEVER had Windows hanging on me. Even when playing games my quad core CPU load rarely goes above 40%. Unlike with dual core the machine got bogged down 100% load when gaming. With quad core I can ALT+Esc during gaming, do something else without feeling a slowdown, return to game and continue.

My 'old timer' will last me at least another 2-3 years:
Asus P5Q Pro-SLi motherbord, Intel Q9300 quad (4x 2,5Ghz), OCZ 4Gb PC2-6400 (yes, I know, old stuff), Geforce 9800GT w/1Gb, Creative xTreme Gamer soundcard, 2x 22" Samsung monitors (dual screen setup), etc.

oh, and do get a PROPER decent PSU. If PSU costs less than R700 then it is probably crap. When I lived in the UK, as minimum standard, I only used to buy what was in www.custompc.co.uk 's "Elite" list.

Thanks for your input :)

My dad however told me he will pay for my whole pc so....

I'm getting AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition @ 3.4GHz and 6mb L3 Cache and I will be getting the ATI Radeon HD 6850 :D

About the PSU... I really don't know what I should get... The Corsair CX400W is out of stock, I have been thinking about the Cooler Master eXtreme power plus 460W. I don't know if this will be enough watts for my Pc though?

The CoolerMaster eXtreme Power Plus 460W is crap compared to the Corsair CX400. I have the EPP 460W in my office PC that is running an i7 860 + HD 5670 and it's fine for that.
You shouldn't have any problems running that AMD X4 965 BE with the HD 6850 either, but I would urge you to rather go for the CX400 if you can.

Having said that my dad will be paying for the pc, he doesn't really want me to use his cards at random online shops. So i'll have to wait for stock and i don't think they'll get stock in this year... It's been out of stock for more than a month now... I should maybe mail them...

Thats what I like about EFT :)

All the online shops that I've bought from so far accepted EFT: Sybaritic, WootWare & Prophecy Shop.

I would say that the SilverStone Strider Essential 400W is quite similar to the CX400, seeing that it also has a single rail design and 3 years warranty. You can read a review of it here: http://ksstudios.com/silverstone-strider-essential-series-st40f-es-400w-psu

I'm not sure how long the warranty on the Zalman is, because it says both 1 year & 3 years on the same page?! Also, the Zalman is using a dual +12V rail design, which I'm not that fond of in mid-range power supplies, because it will limit you on installing big graphics cards.
