AMD's new Threadripper destroys Intel

AMD: launches 3990X

VMWare: "Imma go double my prices if that's OK."

and while the 3990X’s price has not been revealed, analysts expect it to be much more affordable than Intel’s product.

It has been revealed, at the product reveal. It's $3990 and launching on Feb 7.

'tis the reason why the good Lord gave you two kidneys instead of one...

Well considering the Intel 28-core W3175X part is around $3100, having more than double the cores for $800 isn't too shabby. It's not like regular consumers are buying these parts anyway - they have specialised use cases.

So I assume that a new 128-core Epyc is on the way, seeing as they're more or less two Threadrippers smashed together. Which means 256 cores in a single server. Nice.

Upgrade time, @Domains.co.za (Wayne)? 32 cores per server in 2020, pfft... :p

I've got two 16 core Epyc servers from December to play with, had to install Centos 7.6 as nothing under the would recognise the CPU.
Things cost less than a 8 core Silver Intel server, it also has double the RAM and SSDs

Fantastic! Let's roll our own bare metal SQL 2019 Enterprise Server on our dual 3990X box:
SQL Server Enterprise Edition: $7,128 per core

128 cores * 7128 = $1 mil.
At $1 mil for a single piece of software, who cares what the hardware costs.
LOL
That's what you get for using Microsoft.
