anyone else notice issues with amex cards on google and paypal? it's been giving me problems since about 2 weeks ago where i couldn't buy something on ebay, then last night we couldn't rent a movie on google.

i had a long chat on twitter with nedbank today and after a lot of questions, they checked with the fraud department and found out amex is currently blocked at paypal and google "due to security reasons".

would be nice to know what the "security reasons" are and if this will be sorted sometime. would also be nice to know why we weren't told about this.

Well, a few weeks ago some fraudulent Netflix transactions came up on my Amex card. Which Amex should have caught immediately (not very likely that I would open three Japanese Netflix accounts within a few minutes of each other), but didn't. So it makes you wonder about Amex's fraud detection right now.

Admittedly some years ago, but after a series of fraudulent debits on my SA-issued Amex card the investigator told me that in many markets outside the US Amex outsource the whole card operation including fraud detection to the partner institution. In SA that's Nedbank.

I used to have an Amex card, purely for the points on airfares and the ability to upgrade to Business Class when going overseas. In 2008 when booking a BA flight to London, I was unable to use it and was asked to pay the balance. I got several contradictory excuses from their SA office and cancelled it. I even had a Nedbank business account at the time, but this made no difference

My Spotify monthly payment didn't go through this month on my Amex card, so I had to change it to my Visa

I have a feeling that Amex is stopping purchasing from any outside country sources. When you pay, amex is seeing the purchase in America and since you have not opened up your card for purchases in America, it stops it.

I also noticed that with a lot of my payments to paypal UK and amazon etc it was not going through and had to change it to my mastercard.

OOOOhhhh me too, almost had a couple of Netflix charges (reversed by Amex) - I accused a certain merchant as I use my card exclusively with them, but maybe it wasn't them afterall.
