The world's second-most powerful supercomputer will soon begin operations for the US National Security Administration.

Livermore's Sierra supercomputer comprises over 190,000 processing cores and is capable of a peak performance of 125,626 TFLOP/s.

One wonders what they would actually be simulating. Is it a military strategy thing, or the actual physics and environmental effects of multiple nuclear detonations? I mean, surely you don't need a supercomputer to tell you global thermonuclear war is a rather bad idea?

I think a bunch of strategies and economical impacts are programmed into the system including the effects of such. Think of it as a 3 body problem with more variables. Prediction models can be extremely complicating and that's why we resort to computers.
