So you do not recall signing any debit order ... ?

stop the debit order, wait to see who phones or what gets cut off

A debit order cannot be stopped by the client, only a payment order.

wouldnt this work?

Here are the customers' rights we distributed to banks:

Customers can give their banks a written stop-payment instruction to prevent a debit order for a specific amount being processed on the account. When a debit order is returned "payment stopped" on the instruction of a customer, the user may not process further debits under the system.

No idea.

My understanding though was that if I instruct the bank to debit my account with R x every month in favour of a creditor, then, because I issued the instruction, I can stop it at any time.

However, if I sign a debit order authorisation with a creditor, THEY approach the bank to institute this order against my account and I have to approach them (and not the bank) in order to get it stopped.

I can be wrong, of course.
