Wenger is an unwavering advocate of the current system which places few hindrances on young players moving to top clubs. He believes constraints on such freedom, such as the FA's 90-minute-from-home rule and proposed requirement for Premier League clubs to field eight home-grown players in a 25-man squad, would almost certainly signal the end of elite youth programmes such as Arsenal's.
"It will make that policy virtually impossible," said the Frenchman. "If you cannot add any players under 18, and you have the home-grown rule, and on top of that English clubs are limited to bringing in young players who live less than 90 minutes from the training ground, how can we produce home-grown players?"
