Is it possible to get an ultrabook under 10k here in SA. a friend wants to invest in one. Basically a core i7 or even core i5 quadcore processor ample ram and hd space. it will be mainly used for photos and photo editing. extras that he'd like is a touchscreen if possible, backlight keypad and one impoortant factor or feature is full HD screen. Does anyone know if its possible to get such under 10k. The closest one he has found is the hp pavillion 15 beats edition. only concern there is the cpu since its an amd one and probably on the level of core i3 if not lower.

Well, it is not going to be an investment - that much is clear. If the value does not increase, it is not an investment.

That said, you're going to have a hard time finding a proper ultrabook for 10k.

Remember, what separates ultrabooks from normal laptops are basically three things:

Form factor: thinner and smaller (11"-13.3")
Longer battery life (mainly because of power-saving hardware)
The use of a SSD instead of a HDD (ties in with the previous point about battery)

For these perks, you pay a premium. Is your friend sure he really needs an ultrabook? Do his priorities include portability and long battery life? If not, buy a laptop and save money.

Take a look at the Asus Vivobook line...it's the closest you're going to get to an ultrabook form factor in SA for the budget you're looking at. There are some compromises...the screen res is lower (1366*768) than more expensive models, storage is primarily traditional platter drives with an SSD that is probably only big enough to use for cacheing.

If your friend wants portability, there are probably better deals to be had in the thin and light class of notebooks.

He is open to other ideas and he dsnt mind letting go of the ultrabook aspect of it.
I had suggested a core i7 with core i5 as minimum, a dedicated graphics card and see which will offer atleast an HD screen even if its not touch. a backlit keyboard would be a nice addition too. Any ideas are welcome.

I was lucky I got a good deal from gumtree but he is buying one from the shop. Just trying to meander throough the celerons and b960s and hopefully land on something decent and worth the money. core i5 upwards

Consider preowned. If Dell, you still get the balance of next business day.

XPS 13 Gen 3 i5 - R6k
XPS 13 Gen 4 i7 - R3.5k
XPS 15 Gen 3 i7 - R8k
XPS 15 Gen 3 i7 - R10k

Got the last one off Gumtree and the rest off Carbonite. You can't beat these prices. And all are in new condition and under a year old at time of purchase.
