How do you distinguish between flattery and sincere appreciation?

the one start with an F and is a shorter word. The other one is two words and is longer.

EDIT: and they look kinda different too.

EDIT EDIT: and I think they sound kinda different too... depending on your accent. Can't say anything for the smell though.

If I get a compliment and I am in a position to do something for the person, I suspect that its flattery. If I get a compliment from someone I can not do anything for I take it as appreciation.

I would say, the one is from the teeth and the other from the heart. Do you agree?

Flattery is usually something nice said about a physical appearance and sincere appreciation is someone complimenting you on a "service" you provided.
