Eskom's new plan to punish solar users

Eskom has proposed a 183% increase in the fees it charges some households for connecting to its grid.

A calculator the power utility recently released shows that if Eskom's proposal is approved, customers on its Homepower 4 tariff plan will pay R637 per month before consuming a single kilowatt of electricity — up from R225.

Lollies. It'll cost me another 12 panels and maybe I'll replace my electric geysers for gas to go off the grid. I'm happy to use Eskom as a silent genny to charge my batteries, but if they don't want me to do that, I'll pull the plug. Fully SSEG registered, but still ready to go off.

Before we all get upset…who here is on the Homepower 4 tariff exactly? I doubt most households are on this and such hardly anyone is affected.

I’m not.

Because let’s not forget. That specific tariff is what the article is about.

What are most households on?

ANC has really taught black people to be clued up it seems. What he probably means is the middle class. The black middle class is almost at the point of surpassing the whole white population. Also black Eskom customers, who pay, will be affected just as much.

Homepower 4 is the most popular where it is available excluding industrial and business connections. It is the same as the municipal 80A connection. The other options are also not free from this with the same of similar charges as I understand it.

And why do we need another bloody thread to start another argument?

Post-paid City Power customers are already in for a R1000/m charge before electrons start to flow.

mybroadband, FFS, get your **** together, this is just dumb clickbait bullsh!t article, with a picture of a cracked solar panel, really nice. Look I've given credit where it's due, I've often commented nice things about articles that I enjoyed, but this is just stupidity.

The forum title is good, the article title is bad.

They probably so the pushback on the other article.

The vast majority of Eskom Direct customers are on Homepower 4. But the structural changes will apply to all its residential tariff plans, including what it charges municipalities. Therefore, municipalities will likely also have to adopt higher fixed fees if they have not already.

Once again... Do you pay Eskom or your municipality? If Eskom this would effect you, if not, this will not effect you.

@Lupus amen brother, it is time to grab pliers and remove that devilish 1 phase power to one's property. Next stop Eskom says they own our homes internal wires and we have no right to tamper.

If they implement this in my current muni, I will simply disconnect from Eskom and rather have a backup generator and backup inverter with additional panels. Solar is a financial investment with good ROI, and this will just tip the scales further to increase solar investment.

This is theft, plain and simple. Since when do we reward incompetence????? Must be nice to give a crappy service and get paid evermore for it.

You told us not to use it, so we made other plans! Now you want us to use it...

Your payment as reimbursement for my solar system will be due as it was a requirement while Eskom was at Peak Corruption!!

I'm wondering what they will charge municipalities. On the plus side they claim electricity will be cheaper so it's a matter of how municipalities pass it on. They can also include it in the tariff. Not that it matters as they still want to increase the price of electricity as well. Wondering how Nersa would handle it since they've just been rubber stamping default percentage increases but now with cost studies they can pass this on in the form of tariffs.

Is this the same article as that R4,500 increase over 3 years one?
