Analyst backs Mbeki's stance on Zimbabwe

Khuseni Dlamini, a political analyst, has endorsed the statement by President Thabo Mbeki that United Nations holds the key to solving the economic and political crisis in Zimbabwe.

Mbeki was speaking during an interview with Britain's Financial Times. He is currently in Britain to meet Tony Blair, the British prime minister. Mbeki threw his weight behind a planned visit to Zimbabwe by Kofi Annan, the UN secretary general, who wants to negotiate a deal with the country's president, Robert Mugabe.

Dlamini says Zimbabwe's problems is an international one, it's not a South African problem. As much as the issue of Northern Ireland was not viewed as a British problem, even South Africa had to play a meaningful role through the likes of Cyril Ramaphosa, and through President Mbeki's office. He says today's problems cannot be reduced to being responsibility for one country, its very simplistic and misguided to pretend that Pretoria can wake up tomorrow and detect a solution to Zimbabwe's problems.

I think the positive thing here is that President Mbeki has acknowledged that there is in fact a crisis in Zimbabwe?

Kofi Annan may you succeed where so many have gone before and achieved naught.

What a bunch of rubbish. Mbeki: anybody as long as its not me. The international community have condemned zimbabwe over and over - have told them what needs to change. Bob ignores them. Colonial pigs to him. Now Kofi must come to him - because he's not allowed to go anywhere in the world. Mbeki shifting responsibility sideways so typical of him. Now there is a problem? Would take a complete idiot not to see a problem. Country is on its knees - but mbeki doesn't see fit to say anything. Creep.

Anyone else get the feeling that Mbeki has suddenly realised his term is up, and so he doesn't care to play politics anymore? Seems he's changed his tune on quite a couple of things lately.

Years ago - mbeki should have made bob an offer he can't refuse. Even now - mbeki could make such an offer - would bob refuse - who knows mbeki has never tried anything - besides basically hands off. Let Zim implode rather - its up to the zim people/camps, jail, violence, shutting down presses, banning the bbc, refusing UN food, endless list: but it is up to the zim people. Mbeki's credibility is seriously lacking.

Please remember, that Mbeki plays the game of politics. He is not going to openly attack Mugabe, since Mugabe has a large support base here. If you doubt this, remember that Mugabe is seen as one of the first African leaders who achieved independence.

Mbeki knows this, and so is not going to condemn an African hero.

That sounds about correct doing it the african style and proud of it. And if something goes wrong blame apartheid/white people/and the **** atitude of people towards their country because it cant ever be an africans fault.
