Analysts: Sony was saved by Wii success

Agree with everything from your previous post except that the Wii slaughtered the 360 or PS3...they grabbed a different market and shouldn't really be compared to the other consoles unless hardcore titles sell like Dead Space and when developers feel it's a platform worth devleoping on (like IW saying they not interested on doing anything on Wii) like you said, if the Wii didn't launch, the numbers would have been the same, because those casual gamers wouldn't have really swung it much....

Glad Wii brought something new to the table and able to reach out to sooo many people, some that might actually get interested in more hardcore gaming and buy one of the other 2 consoles....but they definitely don't have the legs...unless they do something right with Wii 2...but theere's also questions about their IP's nothing really new and fresh from 'em in the last 2 years...

I assume you mean cheaper than the HDD derivative of the xbox because it is definitely not cheaper than the Arcade.

Was referring to when the consoles were released. Yes things have changed since then.

If what you saying is true regarding the price point, then PS3 would not sell a single unit. Remember that even before the Slim or the $100 price reduction was announced, the PS3 still sold 23mil. Price does matter, but only to the gamers that cannot afford to pay for the console.

My comments were in reference to "casual" gamers, who in all likelihood want a fun time at a low price. Wii gives that type of experience at a much lower price than the PS3, its no secret. For a certain type of person that's all they need :/

If consumers bought the Wii, it was definitely not because of the price. They still had the choice between the PS3 and xbox. I would say if the Wii was not introduced, the ratio split between the PS3 & xbox will be the same as current. The unexpected Wii has slaughtered both Sony & M$ due to innovation.

When the Wii was released it was the cheapest on the market, it made leaps and bounds in that period. But yes, there is a certain novelty, as well.

A section that both Sony & M$ are busy playing catchup on now.

Thats the issue with the Wii, once you wave the control around enough, there is not much incentive in doing it by yourself again. And it also becomes increasingly more difficult to bring out something more innovative as this was the main foundation of the Wii.

That's why we getting the Wii sensor-finger peg thing..more accessories to keep it fresh ;)

Ahh, You noticed then, good then we can expect "changed" attitudes and respect for the PS3 and Sony for their achievements of late?

Wii gives the type of experience that both PS3/Xbox cannot offer regardless of price. If the Wii was R5000.00, would that deter people from buying it?

Are you going to respect the Wii for the total domination that it has enjoyed up untill recently ?

Right now the PS3 is at the top of its game, its the best quality, with good games at a good price.... its taken how long to get to the top ?
All of which can change overnight with the release of Natal or Wii2.

I laugh when people say that if there was no Wii then the Wii owners would not own consoles.
You could say the same thing about the PS2, they really did open the market to new gamers, the typical "jock" gamer. The Wii just opened the market further.

Hardware Sales, 24th Oct 2009

Wii 390,432
PS3 220,316

I would say its still up there!

Well look at the cost of ownership of the wii....

the console + extra remotes + nunchucks + wii fit + motion plus, 5 grand is not far off.

I do not care much for the WII, Its a novelty! No games console. Many/most buy it for the novelty value, not for gaming. I respect Nitendo who saw a niche gap and took many suckers to the cleaners. It' makes for a very nice gift at all occasions.

Wii2? well we will see.

I do not laugh at all about that comment as I would think then the PS2 would still be outselling both the main next gen consoles!

Do not read to much in Natal.......

At R5k? Sure it would deter people.
The basis of your answer is that R5k is expensive for you so it is expensive for everyone else. Especially a console that offers a gaming experience that none other can offer?

I can say for sure that 23mil people bought the PS3 not because of the price. Can you say for sure that 34mil people bought the xbox because it was cheap?

Price does play a part but not to the extend that you are emphasizing. Just as you get R50 for IAP saying "100K", maybe I should get R50 for everytime you say the word "price"?

Its a novelty that has laster longer than the PS3....

I hate to tell you but its the future of gaming, both Xbox and PS are trying to come up with some thing that can compete.

i'm not impressed...seen it with powerglove, eye-toy and obviously E3 with natal and wands...it's great for some casual gaming, but no real gamer wants to be playing MW2 with motion control...definitely not the future of gaming...maybe the mind-reading version, but i would still want to hold a controller...

It's more likely reducing any competitive edge for Nintendo, now they will only have their price point and IP's like Mario left....

Oh, 5k isn't expensive for me at all. But it is for a lot of people, even for those who can afford it its a deterrent. You're second guessing consumers and that is a mistake:

Nintendo hails Wii sales success

Why?

At $250 (£128) in the US, the Wii is about half the price of the PlayStation 3.

Top Ten Reasons Why The Wii is Winning

1. Price

The retail price is lower than both the other current-gen consoles and in spite of its bargain-basement price Nintendo actually makes a profit from each console they sell.

So joke all you want about R50: I'm not making this up, I'm merely repeating what is all over the web. Sticking your fingers in your ears isn't going to make it untrue.

One of the positive factors is that the Wii is well priced. But your aguements point out that it is the main factor for driving Wii sales so high. If this is the case, then the xbox 360 Arcade should be stumping the Wii since it is cheaper right?

Many people, and their reviews on the Internet, do consider it the driving factor, and in many cases it is priced as cheaply as the arcade. I have however never stated it is the only driving factor:

Ye, it takes skill so I can imagine a lot of the "mash controls" type gamers might be afraid of them.

IMO it's the fact that they (Nitendo WII) catered for the young, the old, the niche (sports) and the fun factor. Not just gaming as we know it!
